49ers lose fifth-round LB Fleming to ACL tear

49ers fifth-round OLB Darius Fleming tore his left ACL during his first minicamp practice.

Fleming's injury was of the non-contact variety, bending his knee awkwardly. Initial reports suggested a hamstring injury, but an MRI confirmed a torn ACL. Fortunately for the former Notre Dame star, Fleming signed a four-year, $2.264 million contract one day before the injury. Fleming will likely spend his rookie season on injured reserve.

Report: Henne has support inside Jaguars org.

According to SI.com's Don Banks, there are members of the Jaguars organization who believe Chad Henne will beat out Blaine Gabbert by late August.

It's no surprise that Henne has backers in the front office. The Jags wouldn't have signed him if they didn't believe he could turn his career around. It's telling, though, that the same Henne supporters believed he would have beaten out both Gabbert and Tim Tebow had the Jags traded for the latter. While the official party line is that there is no competition this summer, Gabbert isn't going to have a long leash if he doesn't show significant improvement from his rookie season.

Mularkey: Jones-Drew wants a new contract

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey confirmed that Maurice Jones-Drew is skipping OTAs in an attempt to land a new contract.

"It's all voluntary. I wish he was here. He knows we wish he was here," said Mularkey. "I let little things I had no control over suck the energy out of me [in Buffalo]. I'm not going to let that happen this time around." We're not concerned in the least with Jones-Drew's absence for voluntary offseason work. As long as he's in by training camp, MJD remains a first-round fantasy pick.

Hester's offensive snaps to be limited in '12

Despite installing a special package of plays designed to take advantage of his unique skills, the Bears acknowledge that Devin Hester's offensive snaps will be limited this season.

It's refreshing to see the Bears finally recognizing that Hester is best utilized as a situational player on offense. "It's just a matter of not having him play 70 plays and throw to him twice," said WRs coach Darryl Drake. "Play him 15 [plays], let him touch it 13 [times.]" That's not a realistic ratio, of course. We wouldn't expect more than five offensive touches per game (his career-high is under four per game) for Hester, no matter the snap count.

Welker signs franchise tender, OTAs next week

Patriots re-signed franchise player Wes Welker to a one-year, $9.515 million contract.

Like the rest of the franchise players around the league, Welker had no viable alternative. It's one thing to hold out in protest of a low contract, but quite another to spurn nearly $10 million. The Pats have until July 16 to work out a long-term deal, but there's been no indication that talks will jumpstart. Welker is now eligible to join his teammates in OTAs, starting next Monday.

Knighton (eye) expects to be ready for camp

Jaguars NT Terrance Knighton (eye surgery) says his eye is "progressing a lot faster than they thought it would," and that he expects to be ready for training camp.

Speaking at a Tuesday news conference, Knighton also insisted he was not the instigator in the April nightclub incident that led to his eye injury. He also denied the police report's assertion that he "repeatedly made threats to shoot people." Unable to run and lift weights while he rehabs, Knighton will miss the Jaguars' mandatory June minicamp.

Jason Peters ruptures Achilles a second time

Eagles LT Jason Peters ruptured his Achilles a second time, setting back his recovery three weeks.

A malfunctioning Roll-A-Bout was to blame. The device broke, which led to Peters falling on his face and re-injuring the Achilles. With his 2012 season already in doubt after suffering the initial injury on March 30, Peters can no longer be relied on for a late-season return. The Eagles signed Demetress Bell to hold down the fort while Peters, arguably the league's top left tackle, recovers. They may have to count on Bell for much longer than originally expected.

Kenny Britt may require another knee surgery

Titans coach Mike Munchak suggested Sunday that Kenny Britt may need another surgery on his right knee.

Britt tore his right ACL and MCL last Sept. 25, and had reconstructive surgery on Oct. 7. While beat writer Terry McCormick cautions a follow-up procedure would be "comparatively minor," it'd also be an indication of setback and concerning for Britt's ability to fully regain explosion. Titans DE Derrick Morgan, coming back from his own torn ACL last offseason, had the same sort of follow-up surgery in 2011 training camp. He managed 2.5 sacks in 14 games (10 starts). No second surgery has been scheduled yet for Britt. "He's been doing well, running hard," said Munchak. "We'll just have to see how the knee responds."

Skins re-sign Hightower to compete with Helu

Redskins agreed to terms with RB Tim Hightower on a one-year contract.

Hightower, 26, averaged 3.82 yards per carry in five starts early last season before tearing his left ACL in Week 7. Due to persistent swelling in the knee, surgery was delayed until November 8. Now just over six months removed from the knee reconstruction, Hightower will return to compete with Roy Helu, Evan Royster, and rookie Alfred Morris for running back snaps. Helu has the most talent of the group and is the favorite to lead Washington's backfield in 2012 touches. Hightower's ideal role would be on obvious passing downs, where his bone-crushing blitz-pickup ability comes in most handy.

Healthy McFadden 'making cuts at full speed'

Raiders RBs coach Kelly Skipper doesn't envision any lingering problems from Darren McFadden's 2011 Lisfranc sprain.

"He didn’t have any major surgeries, so he’s able to come back healthy and he’s playing at a high level right now and it’s offseason," Skipper said. "... He’s out here. You would never know he got hurt. He’s making cuts at full speed, everything." McFadden was the No. 7 overall running back in fantasy points per game last season. He's a lock to be a value pick in 2012 drafts.

Carroll: Russell Wilson will compete to start

Following the conclusion of rookie camp Sunday, coach Pete Carroll announced that third-round pick Russell Wilson will be in the hunt for the Seahawks' starting quarterback job.

"He showed us enough," said Carroll. "He's in the competition." Carroll praised Wilson's preparation, "terrific arm," and early grasp of Seattle's West Coast offense while confirming he'll be given an opportunity to start on Opening Day. "I'd hoped that, and we confirmed it in these three days," Carroll said. "He left really no question about he needs to be involved in the competition."

Ravens doctors believe Suggs can play in 2012

Coach John Harbaugh insists the Ravens' doctors believe DE/OLB Terrell Suggs (Achilles' surgery) has a chance to play in 2012.

The recovery timetable is four to six months, giving Suggs a chance to play as early as September (unrealistic) to as late as November. "It's just going to depend on the injury, the healing process and his effort and his work," Harbaugh said. Suggs will almost certainly open the season on PUP, and the Ravens will monitor his rehab from there. The best news is that his Achilles' was only partially torn. Suggs does have an outside chance to play late this season.
