Padres acquired RHP Chris Paddack from the Marlins in exchange for RHP Fernando Rodney.
Paddack has broken through this season with an absurd 0.95 ERA, 0.39 WHIP and 48/2 K/BB ratio over 28 1/3 Low-A innings. The 20-year-old is a nice get for an aging reliever.
Marlins acquired RHP Fernando Rodney from the Padres in exchange for RHP Chris Paddack.
Rodney has allowed only one earned run over 28 2/3 innings while sporting a 33/12 K/BB ratio out of the bullpen this season. With closer A.J. Ramos having yet to blow a save this season, Rodney presumably will slide into a setup role. Ryan Buchter is expected to be first in line for saves now in San Diego.
Caleb Cotham (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Thursday.
Cotham has been out all month with shoulder inflammation. He would appear to have a shot to make it back before the All-Star break.
Jason Heyward is not in the Cubs' lineup Thursday.
He's sitting out for the second straight day against a lefty. The Cubs have Ben Zobrist in right field, Matt Szczur in left, Albert Almora in center and Javier Baez at second base.
Curtis Granderson (calf) remained out of the Mets' lineup Thursday.
Granderson was able to pinch-hit Wednesday but apparently isn't ready to return to the lineup just yet. Brandon Nimmo is in right field and in the leadoff spot and Kelly Johnson is in left.
Dodgers designated LHP Ian Thomas for assignment.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Bud Norris. Thomas, 29, has spent all of this season at Triple-A, posting a 1.42 ERA and 22/5 K/BB ratio across 19 relief innings. It's possible someone will scoop him up on waivers.
Braves acquired RHP Caleb Dirks from the Dodgers in the Bud Norris deal.
The Braves traded Dirks to the Dodgers nearly a year ago to the day for international bonus money but they've now got him back in their system. Dirks, 23, has posted a 1.44 ERA and 35/7 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 relief innings at the Double-A level this season.
Braves acquired LHP Philip Pfeifer from the Dodgers in the Bud Norris deal.
Pfeifer holds a 2.67 ERA and 42/18 K/BB ratio over 30 1/3 innings this season between Low- and High-A. He'll turn 24 in a couple weeks, though, so he's been old for the levels he's pitched at.
