Joe Mauer will serve as the designated hitter Saturday versus the Yankees.
The Twins are using the same lineup they did on Friday, but Mauer will DH and Byung Ho Park will play first base.
Yankees activated 1B Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list.
Teixeira has been sidelined since June 3 with a cartilage tear in his right knee, but he'll make his return Saturday and bat sixth against Twins right-hander Ervin Santana. The veteran slugger went 1-for-9 during a brief minor league rehab assignment and will return to a disappointing .180/.271/.263 batting line.
Matt Cain (hamstring) threw about 20 pitches off the bullpen mound on Friday.
Cain will do the same thing on Sunday before the Giants determine the next step. If the club wants to play it safe, he could throw on the side or pitch batting practice, but he could be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. There should be more clarity on his status soon. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since June 13 with a strained right hamstring.
Kelby Tomlinson (thumb) is about a week to 10 days away from a minor league rehab assignment.
Tomlinson landed on the disabled list earlier this month with a sprained left thumb and Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he still needs time for recovery and strengthening before ramping up baseball activity. His return now appears likely to fall around the All-Star break.
Rays optioned RHP Steve Geltz to Triple-A Durham.
The move clears a spot for newly-acquired outfielder Oswaldo Arcia. Geltz gave up his 10th homer of the season on Friday against the Indians and owns an ugly 6.75 ERA over 20 innings on the year.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny declined to commit to Trevor Rosenthal as his closer after he gave up a walk-off three-run homer in Friday's loss to the Mariners.
Rosenthal didn't retire any of the three batters he faced Friday and gave up a walk-off homer to Adam Lind. It was his third rough appearance in his last five and he now owns a 5.63 ERA and 2.03 WHIP for the year. Matheny has stood behind his closer until now, but he's clearly at the end of his rope. "Yeah, I don't know," said Matheny when asked how the team moves forward with Rosenthal in the ninth inning. "I don't know the answer right now." Kevin Siegrist and Seung-Hwan Oh are both worth stashing in fantasy leagues.
Sergio Romo (elbow) could make his next minor league rehab appearance on Saturday or Sunday.
There was some talk of Romo rejoining the Giants this weekend, but he gave up two runs on three hits over one-third of an inning during his most recent rehab appearance on Thursday. The Giants want to see better results before bringing him back. Romo has been sidelined since April 10 with a strained flexor tendon.
Brewers signed first-round pick OF Corey Ray.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the deal is worth $4.125 million, so it comes in slightly under the $4.382 million slot value attached to the No. 5 overall pick. Ray is a dynamic offensive performer and could make to the majors in relatively short order, so he makes for an exciting name to follow in fantasy leagues. The only question is whether he'll be able to stick in center field.
