Padres transferred RHP Cesar Vargas from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The Padres needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Jose Dominguez. Vargas is sidelined with a strained flexor tendon.

Padres activated LHP Buddy Baumann from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.

Baumann is over his back injury but will remain at El Paso in spite of a 1.46 ERA during his rehab assignment. He should get a shot eventually.

Dexter Fowler (hamstring) may not be ready to return from the disabled list on Monday when first eligible.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated that Fowler might not play at all during the series against the Reds that goes through July 6. Fowler has been out for nearly two weeks of action with a strained right hamstring. Albert Almora, Matt Szczur and Jason Heyward have handled center field in his absence.

Padres purchased the contract of RHP Jose Dominguez from Triple-A El Paso.

Dominguez has posted a 3.79 ERA and 36/25 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings for El Paso this season. The 25-year-old throws very hard but often has no clue where the ball is going.

Padres placed RHP Erik Johnson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 29, with a right elbow sprain.

Johnson's Padres career has gotten off to an inauspicious start, as he's posted a 9.15 ERA over four starts and is now down with an elbow injury. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined. Andrew Cashner (neck) is set to return Sunday and will take Johnson's spot in the rotation.

Baseball America's Ben Badler reports that the Athletics are expected to sign Cuban outfielder Lazaro Armenteros for around $3 million when the international signing period begins Saturday.

There have been mixed reviews on how "Lazarito" has looked during showcases for teams, but everyone agrees that there's plenty of raw ability there. He's only 17 years old and will take a long time to develop, but the A's are evidently willing to buy the expensive lottery ticket.

Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) is at least two weeks away from resuming throwing off a mound.

De La Rosa has been playing catch this week, but it will be a little while before he's allowed on the bump. The Diamondbacks are hoping to get him back sometime in August.

Twins manager Paul Molitor said Friday that Miguel Sano will only play the outfield in an emergency.

The Twins' experiment with Sano in the outfield never made much sense and it appears it's finally come to an end. He'll be used in the designated hitter spot and some at third base. Max Kepler will be the club's primary right fielder.
