Marlins sent INF/OF Don Kelly outright to Triple-A New Orleans.
The Marlins designated him for assignment earlier in the week but he passed through waivers unclaimed. He'll continue to provide organizational depth for the Marlins and should get another opportunity with the big league club before the end of the season.
Pirates acquired LHP Taylor Hearn and LHP Felipe Rivero from the Nationals for RHP Mark Melancon.
Hearn, a 21-year-old left-hander, registered a 2.79 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 39/13 K/BB ratio across 29 innings between the Rookie League Nationals and Class-A Hagerstown this season. He has a power arm, but is still in the process of developing and refining his secondary offerings.
Pirates acquired LHP Felipe Rivero and LHP Taylor Hearn from the Nationals for RHP Mark Melancon.
Rivero, a hard-throwing, high-strikeout left-hander could quickly work himself into a setup capacity in the Pirates bullpen with the expectation that Tony Watson will step into the closer's role. He makes for a nice return for the Pirates on the expiring contract of Mark Melancon.
Nationals acquired RHP Mark Melancon from the Pirates for LHP Felipe Rivero and LHP Taylor Hearn.
Though the Nationals missed out in their pursuit of Aroldis Chapman, they managed to land the lockdown closer that they so desperately were seeking on the trade market. Melancon, who is set to hit free agency after this season, owns a minuscule 1.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 38/9 K/BB ratio across 41 2/3 innings this season.
Marlins recalled RHP Brian Ellington from Triple-A New Orleans.
He'll provide a fresh arm and additional depth in the Marlins bullpen. He has done a tremendous job when called upon this season, registering a 0.79 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 11/5 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings.
Marlins optioned RHP Jose Urena to Triple-A New Orleans.
Urena was blasted in a start against the Cardinals on Friday, prompting his demotion. He should get another opportunity with the big league club in some capacity before the end of the season.
Stephen Vogt is not in the Athletics starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the Indians.
Nothing more than a routine day off for the hard-hitting backstop. Bruce Maxwell will start behind the dish for the A's and bat ninth against Josh Tomlin and the Tribe.
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Felipe Rivero will head to the Pirates as part of the Mark Melancon trade.
Rivero, a 25-year-old southpaw, owns a 4.53 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 53/15 K/BB ratio over 49 2/3 innings out of the Washington bullpen this season. He'll likely slot right into a middle relief role in the Pirates bullpen and could emerge as a late-game option there with his high-strikeout and low-walk rates.
