Albert Pujols will start at first base for the American League in next week's All-Star Game in place of the injured Miguel Cabrera (calf).
And deservedly so in what has been a big bounce-back season for the future Hall of Famer. The rest of AL reserves will be Brock Holt, Jose Iglesias, Jason Kipnis, Manny Machado, Mark Teixeira, Russell Martin, Stephen Vogt, Jose Bautista, Adam Jones, J.D. Martinez and Prince Fielder. Xander Bogaerts, Yoenis Cespedes, Brian Dozier, Brett Gardner and Mike Moustakas are the Final Vote candidates.
Chris Sale was among the American League pitchers selected to next week's All-Star Game.
And he's one of the candidates to start the game in Cincinnati. Other starters joining Sale on the AL club will be Chris Archer, Sonny Gray, Felix Hernandez, Dallas Keuchel and David Price. The AL relievers will be Dellin Betances, Brad Boxberger, Zach Britton, Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera, Darren O'Day and Glen Perkins.
Max Scherzer was among the pitchers named to next week's National League All-Star Game.
Scherzer will be a candidate to start if the Nationals decide to not start him on Sunday. The starters joining Scherzer on the NL squad will be Madison Bumgarner, A.J. Burnett, Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGrom, Zack Greinke, Shelby Miller and Michael Wacha. The NL relievers are Aroldis Chapman, Mark Melancon, Jonathan Papelbon, Francisco Rodriguez and Trevor Rosenthal. Johnny Cueto, Jeurys Familia, Clayton Kershaw, Carlos Martinez and Troy Tulowitzki are the Final Vote candidates.
Matt Andriese will be recalled to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Royals.
The Rays have elected to skip Alex Colome in favor of Andriese. The young righty holds a 3.24 ERA over 41 2/3 innings for the Rays this season.
Monday's game between the Rays and Royals was postponed due to rain.
They'll play a split doubleheader on Tuesday. Edinson Volquez, who had been scheduled for Monday, will be pushed back a day to start during the double-dip. Alex Colome will be skipped by the Rays.
Andrew McCutchen will start next week's All-Star Game in place of the injured Giancarlo Stanton (hand).
Joc Pederson, A.J. Pollock and Justin Upton joined McCutchen as All-Star reserve outfielders, and one of them could also start if Matt Holliday (quad) can't go. Also named as reserves to the National League team were Kris Bryant, Adrian Gonzalez, Nolan Arenado, Brandon Crawford, Yadier Molina, Yasmani Grandal, Anthony Rizzo, D.J. LeMahieu and Joe Panik.
Marco Gonzales (shoulder) is expected to return to game action on Friday with High-A Palm Beach.
Gonzales has been limited to just six starts this season due to an impingement in his left shoulder. He's expected to be built up to 100 pitches by the end of the month, so he could be an option for the Cardinals by that time if he's pitching well.
An X-ray has revealed that Luis Valbuena has a sprained left big toe.
Valbuena has been dealing with the ailment for a while and finally underwent tests. He's not in Monday's lineup and is being listed as day-to-day. Marwin Gonzalez is filling in at third base.
