Cardinals optioned RHP Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis.

Tuivailala received a 12-appearance cup of coffee with the Cardinals last season. He failed to do much with the opportunity, surrendering six runs on 12 hits over nine innings. The 24-year-old right-hander could see additional work with the big league club as the season unfolds, but for now will return to Triple-A. Pitching at the lower level in 2016, he registered an unappealing 5.21 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, but also boasted a strong 72 strikeouts in just 46 2/3 innings.

Jered Weaver said that he has been working through a dead arm since his last bullpen session.

Weaver has come down with dead-arm in springs past and unless word surfaces to the contrary, this does not appear to be a serious concern. The Padres signed the veteran right-hander to a one-year, $3 million contract in mid-February. Weaver is looking to bounce back from a 2016 season in which he posted a 5.06 ERA in 31 starts.

Seth Lugo has been green-lighted to throw up to 95 pitches in Wednesday's World Baseball Classic final against the United States.

In what turned out to be a sneak preview of Wednesday night's game, Lugo pitched against the United States on Friday. He surrendered three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in that one, but picked up the win nonetheless. Lugo will be opposed by Marcus Stroman in Wednesday's spring championship game.

Hector Santiago will not be available to pitch in Puerto Rico's showdown with the United States in Wednesday's World Baseball Classic final.

This is understandable enough, as Santiago put forth a Herculean effort in Monday's 11-inning semifinal win over the Netherlands. In that contest, the southpaw threw a whopping 63 pitches over 3 1/3 innings. Outside of Santiago, though, everybody else in the Puerto Rico bullpen will be available for Wednesday's grand finale.

Shawn O'Malley is back in camp after undergoing a successful appendectomy.

O'Malley's surgery took place on Tuesday. There is no current timetable for his recovery, but Opening Day is looking like a longshot. Said manager Scott Servais, "The surgery went fine. He should recover and it won't be an issue. But obviously anytime you have a little surgery, it's going to take a little time to get him back." Prior to this unfortunately-timed surgery, the 29-year-old infielder was competing with Taylor Motter to serve as a utility bench piece for the Mariners during the coming campaign.

Tyler Moore hit a pair of homers off the bench to lead the Marlins to a 15-9 win over the Mets on Wednesday.

That's five homers for Moore this spring. Moore spent time with the Nationals four straight seasons from 2012-15, but he was traded to the Braves last spring and then missed much of the year. His only really successful stint in the majors came as a rookie, when he hit .263/.327/.513 in 156 at-bats. He posted OPSs in the 600s each of the three subsequent seasons. His hope of contributing to the Marlins would be a first baseman against left-handed pitchers, but since the team is planning on carrying 13 pitches, it wouldn't seem to have room on the roster to carry a true platoonmate for Justin Bour. Maybe Martin Prado's injury will change that, but even if so, it might only be for a week or two.

Steven Matz gave up five runs over four innings Wednesday against the Marlins.

All five runs scored in the first two frames. Matz bounced back with a perfect third before allowing a couple of singles and working out of a jam in the fourth. Matz's velocity has been very good this spring and he had allowed just one run in 8 2/3 innings coming into this one, so the bad day doesn't seem like anything to worry about.

Jeurys Familia blew his second spring save after allowing three runs -- one earned -- in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Marlins.

It was a fifth-inning blown save, but a blown save nonetheless. MLB still figures to announce a suspension for Familia sometime prior to Opening Day. It's obvious that they always intended to delay that announcement until after the WBC was complete.
