Jake Smolinski returned to action on Saturday July 12.

Jul 13 - 3:56 AM

Corey Dickerson went 2-for-3 and drew a walk in his return to action Saturday.

Dickerson hadn't played since tweaking his wrist while making an attempt at a diving catch during Tuesday's game. It shouldn't be an issue for him going forward, especially with the All-Star break coming up.
Jul 13 - 3:56 AM

Ian Desmond went 2-for-5 with a double in his return to action Saturday.

Desmond sat out Friday after leaving Thursday game when he was hit on the right hand by a pitch, but he'll be fine. The Nationals' shortstop is batting .243/.294/.431 for the season.
Jul 13 - 3:56 AM

Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth Saturday as the Dodgers edged the Padres 1-0.

Gonzalez doubled off Kevin Quackenbush in the ninth and came around to score on A.J. Ellis's sac fly to give Kenley Jansen his first win of the year.
Jul 13 - 1:17 AM

Filling in for Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm held the Padres scoreless for six innings on Saturday.

Maholm entered with a 5.18 ERA and he hadn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in an outing in two months, so of course he combined on a shutout of the Padres. He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four while throwing 65 pitches in his six innings. It's the first time since April 14, 2013 that he's escaped a start without allowing a run.
Jul 13 - 1:14 AM

Ian Kennedy went unrewarded after blanking the Dodgers for eight innings on Saturday.

Kennedy has nine starts this season in which he's allowed one or no runs, but he has just seven wins total (six coming in those games, plus one more in which the Padres offense flexed its muscles in a 3-2 victory). The Padres have scored a total of 15 runs in his nine losses.
Jul 13 - 1:10 AM

Hisashi Iwakuma just missed out on a shutout Saturday, allowing two runs over 8 2/3 innings in a win over the A's.

Brandon Moss homered with two outs in the ninth to knock Iwakuma out of the game, denying him not only his first shutout, but actually his first career complete game. After struggling at the end of June, Iwakuma has allowed just three runs over 21 2/3 innings in winning his first three starts of July. He's struck out 25 and walked none during that span. Overall, he has an 80/8 K/BB ratio in 96 2/3 innings.
Jul 13 - 1:01 AM

Jesse Chavez yielded three runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mariners on Saturday.

Chavez will head into the All-Star break with just one quality start in his last four tries, and he's rapidly approaching his career high for innings. We expect that the A's will sent him to the bullpen at some point, though it doesn't figure to happen immediately after the break.
