NFL suspended 49ers OLB Aldon Smith nine games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

The 49ers have a Week 8 bye, so Smith won't be available until Week 11. As San Francisco has already lost ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL) and NT Glenn Dorsey (torn biceps), it's fair to wonder if the team will be forced to play more aggressive offense in Colin Kaepernick's second year as a starter. Smith's ban turned out to be even longer than expected, but it's a fair punishment regardless following Smith's array of off-field transgressions. The 49ers will turn to special teams type Dan Skuta and sophomore Corey Lemonier opposite Ahmad Brooks. It's an enormous downgrade in pass-rush ability.

Chargers waived WR Tevin Reese.

Teammate nicknamed Reese "sweet feet" following OTAs, but his impact deteriorated when the pads came on. The rookie packs just 163 pounds onto his 5-foot-10 frame. A Baylor alum, Reese was the 240th overall pick in May's draft.

Bills released QB Jordan Palmer.

He threw three interceptions in the preseason finale.

Bengals RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is expected to miss the first month of the regular season.

When he returns, Burkhead will slot in as Cincinnati's No. 4 tailback and help on special teams. The Bengals will open the season with a two-man RBBC of Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Cedric Peerman will be the top reserve.

The Cowboys may open the season with Justin Durant as their lone every-down linebacker.

The team is reportedly considering a committee approach at the two other positions. Whether Durant's position will be middle or weak-side linebacker also remains unsettled. Fourth-round rookie Anthony Hitchens, Rolando McClain, Kyle Wilber, and Bruce Carter are all competing for complementary snaps.

The Giants expect MLB Jon Beason (foot) back at practice Monday.

Beason suffered a sesamoid fracture in his foot during June workouts. His Week 1 availability against the Lions may end up going down to the wire, but the Giants seem optimistic. He's a critical cog in New York's run defense.

The Eagles are reportedly trying to trade WR Damaris Johnson.

They likely hope to get a conditional seventh-round pick for smallish Johnson, although in all likelihood this is the precursor to Johnson's release. Johnson did have a productive preseason, catching nine balls for 90 yards with a TD, and also rushing 12 times for 83 yards with an additional score.

Eli Manning expressed concern Friday that mastering new OC Ben McAdoo's offense could be a "season-long" process.

"It’s a work in progress," Manning said. "It’s not the final product right now. The more games, the more plays we get, more practice, there’s definitely room for improvement. And that’ll be a season-long situation – which is, I think normal. That’s not a bad thing." Manning was completely ineffective in the preseason, completing just 48.8 percent of his 41 pass attempts. The Giants had previously targeted a 70-percent completion rate for Manning in 2014.
