Ryan Braun is out of the Brewers' starting lineup Tuesday due to general soreness.
It sounds like a routine day off, for the most part. Braun went 3-for-3 on Monday night against the Angels and is batting .372/.443/.605 in 24 total games this year.
Rangers LHP prospect Yohander Mendez spun five shutout innings Monday for High-A High Desert.
It came in a no-decision. The only hit Mendez allowed came in the second inning on a leadoff double by Rudy Flores. Mendez is undefeated in five starts this year and leads the California League with 34 strikeouts in only 24 innings. He also ranks sixth in both ERA (1.88) and WHIP (0.96). The 21-year-old has surrendered just one run in his last 21 innings.
Athletics RHP prospect Daniel Mengden scattered five hits and two walks over six shutout innings Monday in a win for Triple-A Nashville.
69 of his 96 pitches went for strikes. It was Mengden's first Triple-A start after beginning the year with Double-A Midland. The right-hander has won his last three starts, compiling a dominant 1.06 ERA over that stretch. Mengden has been wild at times this year (14 free passes) but he's countered that with a high strikeout rate (9.93 K/9). His big league debut could be coming sooner than expected.
Cody Anderson is expected to be called up to start Saturday against the Royals.
Anderson was demoted to the minors last week after struggling to the tune of a 7.65 ERA through four starts. He gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings during his lone start in Triple, though he did strike out six batters. Still, he's strictly an AL-only play.
Mike Moustakas is out of the starting lineup for the second straight day Tuesday.
The thought was that he was just getting the day off on Monday, but it sounds like something could be up. The Royals should provide an update soon. Christian Colon is starting at third base versus Washington.
Cubs transferred INF Christian Villanueva from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot for Ryan Kalish on the 40-man roster. Villanueva fractured his right fibula in late February and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the season.
Cubs purchased the contract of OF Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Iowa.
He'll replace the injured Matt Szczur (hamstring) on the active roster. Kalish, now 28, was batting .368/.471/.509 through 20 games in Triple-A this season. He'll mostly function as a lefty bat off the bench, but he could see a couple of starts mixed in.
Rays SS prospect Daniel Robertson ended a three-game hitless streak by providing four hits Monday in a win for Triple-A Durham.
Robertson had been just six for his last 29 before Monday's explosion. The 22-year-old finished a home run shy of the cycle. He also scored twice while plating four runs. Robertson earned his promotion to Triple-A this year by hitting .274 across 299 at-bats for Double-A Montgomery in 2015. He homered 15 times in 2014 but has only logged five round-trippers since then.
