Adam Jones is out of the Orioles' starting lineup on Wednesday afternoon against the Mariners.

It might be a routine day of rest. Craig Gentry will start in center field and bat ninth versus Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales.

Kyle Seager (illness) is out of the Mariners' lineup again on Wednesday.

Seager has a stomach virus and will miss his second consecutive game. Danny Valencia is starting at third base and batting sixth Wednesday afternoon against the Orioles and right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.

Athletics acquired LHP Sam Moll from the Rockies for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Moll was designated for assignment by the Rockies last week to open a 40-man roster spot for corner infield prospect Ryan McMahon. The lefty reliever will report to the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.

Odubel Herrera (hamstring) remains out of the Phillies' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Herrera strained his left hamstring on Monday night, though he told reporters Tuesday that he doesn't think he will need a disabled list stint. Nick Williams is starting in center field and batting fifth on Wednesday afternoon against the Padres. Rhys Hoskins is in left and Cameron Perkins is in right.

Jered Weaver has announced his retirement from baseball.

Weaver opened the season 0-5 with a 7.44 ERA in nine starts before landing on the disabled list in May due to a hip injury that continues to plague him. "While I've been working hard to get back on the mound, my body just will not allow me to compete like I want to," Weaver said in a statement Wednesday. "Many thanks to the Padres organization for the opportunity to play in the amazing city of San Diego. You have been very professional and respectful during this process and I really appreciate that." The 34-year-old right-hander spent 12 seasons in the major leagues between the Angels and Padres, compiling a 150-98 record and 3.63 career ERA. He had three straight top-five finishes in the American League Cy Young Award balloting back in 2010-2012.

Athletics optioned RHP Josh Smith to Triple-A Nashville.

This move clears a 25-man roster spot for reliever Chris Hatcher, who was acquired from the Dodgers on Tuesday. Smith has posted a 4.89 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 35 innings this season out of the Oakland bullpen.

Jose Pirela is not in the Padres' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Phillies.

Cory Spangenberg will play left field and bat cleanup against Philadelphia right-hander Nick Pivetta. This appears to be a routine day off for Pirela, who went 0-for-4 on Tuesday night but is enjoying a nice August overall.

Miguel Gomez (knee) is on track to be activated from the disabled list Saturday.

Gomez will first play in a couple of minor league rehab games Thursday and Friday at High-A San Jose. The 24-year-old infielder has been sidelined since August 8 because of inflammation in his right knee.
