NFL suspended Broncos WR Wes Welker four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Sep 2 - 6:56 PM

No. 2 overall pick G/T Greg Robinson will come off the bench to begin the season.

Robinson was beaten out for right-guard duties by May signee Davin Joseph. Robinson is listed as the top backup to both LT Jake Long and LG Rodger Saffold. His bench status is rather embarrassing for a team that had many other needs, but decided to go with the "best player available" at No. 2 overall. Robinson should make starts at some point in 2014.

Reserve Cardinals OG Earl Watford has "dabbled" at right tackle.

Like fellow 2013 draftee Jonathan Cooper, Watford couldn't win a starting job along the interior in camp. Ted Larsen and Paul Fanaika are the Cardinals' starting guards. "It gives me more flexibility on the O-line, and it’s always good the more you know," Watford said of his reps at tackle. He's a deep reserve right now.

Colts placed OT Xavier Nixon (knee) on injured reserve/designated to return.

A second-year undrafted free agent out of Florida, Nixon will be first eligible to return in Week 9. It's quite possible he ends up spending the entire season on I.R./return. His activation will depend on the Colts' needs at tackle.

Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin (hip) says he'll be active for Thursday's opener against the Packers.

Irvin should come off the bench behind K.J. Wright and Malcolm Smith, but should get some chances to rush Aaron Rodgers.

NFL reinstated Cowboys DT Josh Brent; suspended him 10 games.

Brent, who last played in 2012, can return to team activities after six weeks. He'll be first eligible to play in Week 12 against the Giants. Brent spent 180 days in jail following his January conviction for intoxication manslaughter. Any other team would have likely pulled the plug on Brent, but the Cowboys badly need him along their thin defensive line. Brent is only 26 years old.

Saints waived QB Ryan Griffin.

Griffin was beaten out by Luke McCown to back up Drew Brees. His late release is a bit of dirty pool from the Saints, as it lessens his chances of latching on elsewhere. The Saints almost certainly waited to make the move to increase their odds of sneaking him through to the practice squad. Griffin had a solid preseason, completing 48-of-77 passes for 530 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. A second-year undrafted free agent, Griffin is 25.
Sep 2 - 6:18 PM

Colts signed OG Jamon Meredith.

Meredith was among the Bucs' final cuts after combining to start 22 games the past two seasons. He provides depth for a Colts interior line that's thin after the loss of LG Donald Thomas in July. C Khaled Holmes (ankle) is a "long shot" for Week 1. It's worth noting that Meredith is not an effective blocker.
