Jharel Cotton held the Astros to two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings Sunday for his sixth win of the season.

It was a gutty performance against one of the best offenses in baseball. Cotton walked three batters and struck out only two, but he also limited Houston to just four total hits. The 25-year-old right-hander is 6-10 with a 5.71 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 82/45 K/BB ratio in 104 innings (19 starts) this season. He'll face the Rangers at home next.

Marwin Gonzalez hit his 21st home run of the season on Sunday afternoon against the A's.

It was a solo blast in the bottom of the seventh inning against A's starter Jharel Cotton, but the Astros were held off the board from there in the eventual 3-2 loss. Gonzalez has an excellent .307/.382/.554 batting line through 103 games this season with first-place Houston.

Brad Peacock took a loss Sunday after allowing three runs -- one earned -- over 5 1/3 innings against the A's.

Peacock struck out eight, but he also issued two walks and surrendered seven hits as he fell to 10-2 on the season. Marwin Gonzalez and Alex Bregman both committed errors behind him in the A's two-run top of the first inning. Peacock will carry a 3.21 ERA into his next start on the road against the Angels.

Cheslor Cuthbert went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Royals' 7-4 win over the Indians on Sunday.

Cuthbert launched a game-tying solo shot off Danny Salazar in the bottom of the fourth inning and he contributed a two-run single to the Royals' three-run fifth inning. The 24-year-old infielder is slashing .226/.265/.340 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 39 games this season.
Aug 20 - 5:37 PM

Jason Hammel surrendered three earned runs over six innings Sunday in a win over the Indians.

It wasn't the sharpest performance, but Hammel easily out-dueled Indians starter Danny Salazar, who was lit up for six earned runs on 12 hits. Hammel is now 6-9 on the season with a 4.73 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. He'll take on the Indians again next time out -- this time on the road.
Aug 20 - 5:34 PM

Danny Salazar was knocked around for six earned runs on 12 hits Sunday in a loss to the Royals.

Salazar had been on a roll since returning to the Indians' starting rotation in late July, but he hit a wall Sunday afternoon in Kansas City. The 27-year-old right-hander is now 5-6 on the season with a 4.30 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and 128/38 K/BB ratio in 92 innings. He'll try to get back on track next time out in a rematch with the Royals.
Aug 20 - 5:31 PM

Andrelton Simmons hit his 13th home run of the year in the Angels' 5-4 win over the Orioles on Sunday.

It was a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning. Simmons also made a couple of tremendous defensive plays at shortstop in the afternoon victory at Camden Yards. The 27-year-old is slashing .292/.345/.451 through 122 games this season and will probably get a number of down-ballot MVP votes if he can finish strong.
Aug 20 - 5:28 PM

Bud Norris netted his 19th save of the season on Sunday afternoon against the Orioles.

The closer carousel continues in Anaheim. Norris, Kenyan Middleton, Yusmeiro Petit, and Cam Bedrosian have all earned saves this month, and Blake Parker is also believed to be in the ninth-inning mix. Norris, who had been struggling mightily, has now made two straight scoreless appearances.
