Jacques McClendon has been named the Jaguars' starting center over sixth-round rookie Luke Bowanko.

A fifth-year pro, McClendon's lone two starts came at left guard last season. McClendon was shaky in the preseason. It's a trouble spot for the Jags. RG Brandon Linder could eventually kick to the middle.

Speaking Monday, Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter said Justin Durant will man the weak-side, and that Rolando McClain will start in the middle.

That may be the Cowboys' starting trio, but Durant is expected to be the only every-down player. Fourth-rounder Anthony Hitchens should mix in with McClain, who hasn't started a game since November 2012. The Cowboys are using duct tape and glue as they attempt to assemble their 2014 defense.

Raiders signed CB Ras-I Dowling to the practice squad.

The No. 33 overall pick of the 2011 draft was waived by the Jets at final cuts. Dowling didn't appear in a regular-season game in 2013.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera remains "confident" Cam Newton (ribs) will be ready for Sunday's opener.

Newton will wear a flak jacket against the Bucs. It's something Michael Vick and Tony Romo, among others, have done before at quarterback. Newton's reps should be limited in practice this week, but he'll be ready to rock versus Tampa.
Sep 1 - 3:11 PM

Packers TE Brandon Bostick (fibula) was held out of Monday's practice, and will be inactive for Thursday's opener if he doesn't practice on Wednesday.

All signs point toward Bostick sitting out against the Seahawks. He should be considered questionable for Week 2.

Free agent G/C Adam Gettis will work out for the Giants on Tuesday.

Gettis was waived by the Redskins last week. He'd be an upside flier for the G-Men's shaky offensive line, but showed very little in two years in Washington.
Sep 1 - 3:06 PM

The Panthers have "no immediate plans" to sign free agent Stephen Hill following Monday's workout.

The Panthers are simply updating their "ready list." Carolina has one of the league's thinnest receiver corps, so it's not a good sign for Hill's 2014 prospects that he's walking away without a deal.

Chargers ILB Manti Te'o (sprained foot) has resumed practicing.

Te'o had been battling a left-foot issue after undergoing offseason surgery on his right foot. Te'o went down in the Bolts' second preseason game on August 15, but sounds like he'll be ready for next Monday's opener.
