Jake Arrieta was the victor on Monday, tossing one-run ball over seven innings to help the Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

Arrieta allowed an RBI single to Andrew McCutchen in the first inning but was unflappable the rest of the way. Overall, he gave up four hits, walked none, and struck out seven to improve to 2-1. He carries an impressive 1.74 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and a 19/4 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings. Arrieta matches up with the division rival Reds on the road next.

A.J. Burnett remained winless following Monday's start against the Cubs, allowing one run over six innings in a no-decision.

Burnett allowed eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out only one batter, but was still able to limit the Cubs to just the one run. That leaves the right-hander 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and a 16/5 K/BB ratio in 18 innings. Burnett can potentially pick up his first win of the season in Arizona against the Diamondbacks in his next outing.

Starling Marte hit a ninth-inning solo home run, but it was too late to help the Pirates stage a comeback against the Cubs on Monday.

Marte belted a Zac Rosscup offering to left field in the ninth to make it a 5-2 game, but it was too little, too late for the Pirates. Marte, who finished 1-for-4 on Monday, has been on a power surge lately, homering in three out of his last four games. Other than that, though, he hasn't done much at the dish as he's batting .178/.208/.467.

Jorge Soler finished with four hits and a pair of runs scored in five trips to the plate in Monday's win versus the Pirates.

Soler singled and scored in the fifth, then doubled and scored in the seventh. The young outfielder is on a seven-game hitting streak and has safely hit in 10 of 12 games overall. He owns an impressive .320/.364/.520 slash line with two home runs and nine RBI to begin the season.

Kris Bryant knocked in three runs and walked to help lead the Cubs to a win over the Pirates on Monday.

Bryant finished 3-for-4 on the evening. He tied the game at one apiece with a fifth-inning RBI single. In the seventh, he brought in a pair of runs with a double and came around to score on two Pirate errors. Bryant has yet to sate fans' appetite for power with a home run, but has looked comfortable at the plate following his 0-for-4 performance in his major league debut.

Justin Upton left Monday's game versus the Rockies in the fourth inning.

It's certainly possible that the Padres were just being careful here since they had a big lead, as Upton was returning to the lineup after missing a game with a sore quad. The club should give an update on his status after the game.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said after Monday's game that he would worry about the closer situation when Joe Nathan (elbow) returns from the disabled list.

He has previously stated that Nathan would get his job back when he returned, but the skipper appears to be backpedaling a bit here. Perhaps he might finally be willing to face reality and admit that Joakim Soria, who is 5-for-5 in save chances with a 1.35 ERA, is a better choice for the ninth inning. As for Nathan, he could throw a simulated game soon, which might be the last step before he's activated.

Padres manager Bud Black said that Ian Kennedy (hamstring) "looked good" during an 81-pitch appearance in an extended spring training game Monday.

"He looked good, [threw] all his pitches," Black said. "He had a few strikeouts. They nicked him for a couple runs, but overall he's throwing the ball good, no issues with the hamstring." Black wouldn't officially confirm that Kennedy was slated to rejoin the rotation on Saturday against the Dodgers when first eligible, but all signs point to it happening. Odrisamer Despaigne will head back to the bullpen.
