Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's Cactus League victory against the Padres.

Cruz made his 2015 Cactus League debut in style, homering off of Ian Kennedy in the third inning to bring in teammate Robinson Cano. Cruz led the majors in home runs with 40 last season. Despite a move to a more pitcher-friendly park, the slugger is still expected to provide plenty of offense this year.
Mar 5 - 6:33 PM

Hunter Strickland allowed a run in an inning of work as the Giants defeated the Cubs 8-6 Thursday in Cactus League play.

Strickland's spring has started poorly, as he allowed three runs in an inning on Tuesday. This time, he allowed just one run -- a lead-off home run to Billy McKinney. The right-hander has a blazing fastball but as his 2014 post-season performance illustrated, he runs into problems at times with a propensity to allow home runs.
Mar 5 - 6:30 PM

Jacob Turner pitched two scoreless innings Thursday against the Giants.

Turner is looking to win a spot at the back of the Cubs' rotation. He did allow three base runners on a single and two walks, but was able to navigate his way out of trouble. The young right-hander had a rough go of things both before and after coming to the Cubs from the Marlins, finishing with an aggregate 6.13 ERA. Turner has struggled to miss bats in close to 300 major league innings.
Mar 5 - 6:27 PM

Garrett Richards (knee) will throw live batting practice on Saturday.

It will be the first time he's faced hitters since he tore his left patellar tendon last August. Richards won't be ready for Opening Day, but his rehab is coming along well and he's expected to miss only the first couple weeks of the season.
Mar 5 - 6:25 PM

Ryan Vogelsong had a rough go of things Thursday against the Giants, yielding four runs in two innings of work.

Vogelsong was four runs in debt in a flash, as he allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning before walking Kris Bryant to load the bases. Kyle Schwarber unloaded them with a grand slam to right field. Vogelsong, 37, will likely serve as a swingman for the Giants. He finished with a 4.00 ERA and a 151/58 K/BB ratio in 184 2/3 innings last season.
Mar 5 - 6:23 PM

Preliminary tests have determined that Hunter Pence has a fractured left forearm.

The Giants are still awaiting X-ray results that they anticipate will confirm the diagnosis of the team's doctor. "Doesn't look good," manager Bruce Bochy said. Pence was injured when he was hit by a pitch during Cactus League play on Thursday. There's no timetable yet for how long he'll be out, but obviously he's not going to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 5 - 6:22 PM

Kyle Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a grand slam Thursday in a loss to the Giants.

The Cubs' first round pick in the 2014 draft, going fourth overall, is expected to start the season with High-A Myrtle Beach. Schwarber posted incredible numbers across three levels of A-ball last season, including a 1.061 OPS and 18 home runs in 311 plate appearances.
Mar 5 - 6:19 PM

Robinson Chirinos went 2-for-3 with an RBI, but the Rangers fell 5-4 to the Royals on Thursday.

Chirinos will be handling everyday catching duties for the Rangers this season with Carlos Corporan serving as his understudy while Jorge Alfaro waits in the wings. Though Chirinos left a bit to be desired in terms of hitting for average and drawing walks in 2014, the 30-year-old ripped 15 doubles and 13 home runs in 338 plate appearances.
