Nate Shierholtz was informed Saturday that he would not make the Rangers' Opening Day roster.

He would've stood to make $1.75 million if he made the team. It's unclear if he'll ask for his release and look for a job elsewhere, or if he'll accept an assignment to the minor leagues.

Rangers acquired LHP Sam Freeman from the Cardinals for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Freeman was unlikely to crack the Cardinals' Opening Day bullpen, so they opted to flip him to get what they could. The 27-year-old posted a 2.61 ERA, and 1.40 WHIP with a 35/19 K/BB ratio in 38 innings in 2014.

Padres reassigned INF/OF Jake Goebbert, INF Brett Wallace and C/1B Cody Decker to minor league camp.

All three were longshots to crack the Opening Day roster in reserve roles. Goebbert should get a chance with the Padres at some point during the upcoming season.

Zack Greinke is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game on Wednesday.

He made it through Friday's Cactus League game without any issue, despite his command being worse than he would like. He owns an 11/6 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings on the spring and looks to be ready to go for Opening Day.
Mar 28 - 1:29 PM

Cubs optioned RHP Eric Jokisch to Triple-A Iowa.

The 25-year-old could have competed for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen, but posted a 6.00 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 7/2 K/BB ratio in 12 spring innings. He'll provide organizational depth at Triple-A.
Mar 28 - 1:12 PM

Padres manager Bud Black officially named James Shields as the team's Opening Day starter.

The move doesn't come as a major surprise, as the 33-year-old hurler was signed this winter to be the ace of the Padres staff. His fantasy value continues to rise as he's pitching in the friendly confines of Petco Park.

J.J. Hardy is scheduled to undergo an MRA exam on his injured left shoulder on Monday.

Hardy has been receiving treatment in recent days, but the Orioles want to ensure that there is no structural damage. He's expected to be held out of action until Tuesday.

Brandon League is expected to be sidelined for the next two months and is attempting to avoid surgery on his ailing shoulder.

League expects to begin the season on the 60-day disabled list, and may be out considerably longer. He can safely be written off in all but the deepest of NL-only formats.
