Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs over seven innings and struck out nine in a 5-4 win over the Cardinals on Friday.

Strasburg gave up both runs in the first inning, but really settled down from there. He walked just one batter and notched seven strikeouts in the span of eight batters at one point. After finishing last season strong, the impending free agent is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 40/8 K/BB ratio in 36 innings through his first five starts this season. He’ll attempt to keep it going next week against the Royals on the road.
Apr 30 - 12:16 AM

Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Cardinals to convert his eighth save of the season.

Asked to hold a one-run lead, Papelbon issued a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Kolten Wong, but he induced a double play from Brandon Moss before getting Matt Carpenter to ground out to end it. The veteran closer owns a 2.61 ERA and 7/1 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings so far this season. He should find himself among the league leaders in saves on this club.
Apr 30 - 12:16 AM

Danny Espinosa went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday’s win over the Cardinals.

After Jayson Werth gave the Nationals the lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, Espinosa followed by taking Mike Leake deep for his first home run of the season. It was nice to see, but he’ll need to do more to silence those clamoring for top prospect Trea Turner. Espinosa is batting just .194/.320/.258 through 22 games this season.
Apr 30 - 12:15 AM

Mike Leake struggled again Friday, allowing five runs over seven innings in a loss to the Nationals.

Leake gave up four runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run homer by Danny Espinosa. He struck out two and walked one in the loss. Signed to a five-year, $80 million deal over the winter, Leake is 0-3 with a disappointing 5.83 ERA through five starts. He’ll try to get in the win column next week against the Phillies at home.
Apr 30 - 12:15 AM

Michael Taylor hit a leadoff homer off Mike Leake on Friday against the Cardinals.

It was his third home run of the season and his second leadoff shot. The blast ended a 22-inning scoreless streak for Washington. Taylor has struggled to take advantage of an opportunity in center field with Ben Revere sidelined, batting just .195/.232/.338 over 19 games. Revere just began a minor league rehab assignment and should be back with the Nationals in a few days.
Apr 30 - 12:14 AM

Matt Adams went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Friday’s loss to the Nationals.

Adams did most of the heavy lifting for the Cardinals’ offense on Friday, with an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run blast in the eighth inning. Despite his best efforts, St. Louis ended up falling one run short. Adams has mostly struggled in sporadic playing time this season, batting .238/.289/.429 over 22 games. He’s no longer on the radar in mixed fantasy leagues.
Apr 30 - 12:14 AM

Ian Desmond went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI double in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Angels.

Desmond’s hot hitting continues. The 30-year-old batted just .109 through his first 12 games this season, but he’s hitting .394 (13-for-33) with three home runs, three doubles, and nine RBI over his last 10 games. He has also drawn six walks in that time. Those fantasy owners who were patient are being rewarded.
Apr 29 - 11:42 PM

Shawn Tolleson fired a 1-2-3 ninth inning Friday against the Angels on Friday for his eighth save.

Tolleson whiffed two batters in the frame. The 28-year-old gave up five runs in a disaster outing back on April 6, so he still has an ugly 6.00 ERA, but he has allowed just one run over his last nine appearances.
