Red Sox activated RHP Hector Velazquez from the 10-day disabled list.

Velazquez missed exactly 10 days with a lower back strain. The 29-year-old right-hander holds a strong 2.10 ERA and 18/5 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings (two starts, eight relief appearances) this season for the Red Sox. He'll be available out of the bullpen Thursday night against the Rays.
May 24 - 10:18 AM

Red Sox optioned LHP Bobby Poyner to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Poyner has posted a cool 1.86 ERA and 9/1 K/BB ratio in 9 2/3 innings this season out of the Red Sox bullpen, but the team needed to make room for Hector Velazquez, who has been activated off the disabled list in a corresponding 25-man roster move. Poyner will be back up soon enough.
May 24 - 10:16 AM

Justin Smoak is not in the Blue Jays' lineup Thursday afternoon against the Angels.

Kendrys Morales will get the start at first base and Josh Donaldson will take a turn at designated hitter versus Angels right-hander Nick Tropeano.
May 24 - 10:14 AM

Zack Cozart is getting the day off Thursday.

Cozart went 3-for-4 with a walk on Wednesday, but Luis Valbuena will start at third base and bat seventh Thursday versus Blue Jays righty Marco Estrada.
May 24 - 10:11 AM

Gregory Polanco is getting the day off Thursday.

Adam Frazier will start in right field and bat second versus the Reds. Francisco Cervelli, Josh Bell, and Jordy Mercer are also out of Pittsburgh's lineup.
May 24 - 9:42 AM

Francisco Cervelli (hand, finger) is out of the Pirates' starting lineup Thursday versus the Reds.

Cervelli left Wednesday night's game in the 12th inning due to discomfort in his right hand and finger. This has been a lingering issue for the veteran catcher, but it doesn't sound overly serious. Elias Diaz is starting behind the plate and batting seventh Thursday afternoon against Cincinnati right-hander Luis Castillo.
May 24 - 9:41 AM

Randal Grichuk (knee) hit a two-run homer and played six innings in right field Wednesday in a rehab game with High-A Dunedin.

He went 0-for-2 with two walks and two strikeouts in his minor league rehab debut on Tuesday. The 26-year-old outfielder was batting just .106/.208/.227 through 25 games when he landed on the disabled list April 30 with a sprained PCL in his right knee and he'll probably play several more rehab games before returning to the Blue Jays' active roster.
May 24 - 8:45 AM

Hansel Robles (knee) allowed a run on three hits and a walk Wednesday in his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Robles landed on the disabled list May 9 after spraining his right knee during a relief appearance against the Reds. He should be ready to return to the Mets' bullpen after a couple better rehab outings.
