Nick Swisher (knees) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's Cactus League loss to the Giants.

In his first Cactus League action of spring, Swisher came out swinging. The first baseman had an RBI single in the fourth inning off postseason hero Madison Bumgarner, a tough first assignment for Swisher. He'll still likely start the year on the disabled list -- Swisher served as the designated hitter Wednesday -- but shouldn't require too much time to get up to speed.
Apr 1 - 7:15 PM

Corey Kluber allowed three runs while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings in his final Cactus League start against the Giants Wednesday.

Kluber was victimized for a two-run homer, and he gave up five hits in total. It was a passable last tune-up before the real games start for the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. It should be another big year for the soon-to-be 29-year-old.
Apr 1 - 7:12 PM

Matt Duffy hit his third home run of the spring, a two-run shot, in Wednesday's Cactus League win over the Indians.

Duffy is hitting .382 with 15 RBI this spring in his quest to win a bench job. The homer, off reigning AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, might have secured his spot on the Opening Day roster.
Apr 1 - 7:00 PM

Madison Bumgarner was sharp in his final Cactus League outing Wednesday, allowing one run while striking out four over four innings of work.

Bumgarner scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter in the outing. His Cactus League ERA sits at 4.91, not overly impressive but not terribly important now that spring is over, either. Bumgarner is looking to carry momentum over after one of the most dominant postseasons ever for a pitcher.

Yangervis Solarte went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-2 win against the White Sox.

Solarte went yard off of David Robertson in the fifth inning for his second spring home run. Officially in a super utility role, Solarte nears the end of spring training carrying a .310 average (18-for-58).
Apr 1 - 6:48 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 1-for-2 with a walk and a three-run home run on Wednesday against the White Sox.

Gyorko's three-run home run off of Jeff Samardzija capped off a five-run outburst in the first inning. The 26-year-old has had a solid spring showing, batting .283 (15-for-53) with a pair of home runs and six RBI. With a revamped Padres offense, Gyorko is less integral, but they are still hoping to see a bounce-back from last year's disappointing .612 OPS.
Apr 1 - 6:46 PM

James Shields twirled a trio of scoreless innings in his final start of the spring Wednesday against the White Sox.

Shields looked regular season-ready, yielding only three hits without issuing a walk and striking out two. In Cactus League play, Shields allowed six earned runs in 19 1/3 innings with a 23/5 K/BB ratio. He now has the unenviable task of facing Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw on Opening Day.
Apr 1 - 6:43 PM

Jeff Samardzija, making his final spring training start, gave up five runs in four innings versus the Padres on Wednesday.

The Padres racked up six hits against the right-hander, including a three-run Jedd Gyorko home run which capped off a five-run first inning. Samardzija walked none and struck out three. He would have liked to post better spring results, as he owns an 8.44 ERA over 22 1/3 innings, but he'll have to live with it. Samardzija will start on Opening Day on Monday against Royals' right-hander Yordano Ventura.
