Kyle Freeland surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.

Freeland struck out two and walked one on the afternoon. Three of the four runs on his line scored via the home run, as Nick Hundley burned him for a two-run shot in the fourth inning and Jae-gyun Hwang roughed him up with a solo shot in the sixth. Freeland will carry a 3.84 ERA and 1.45 WHIP into a home start against the Reds next time he toes the rubber.

Bud Norris (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Inland Empire on Thursday.

Norris might only need one game on the assignment before he is ready to be activated from the disabled list. He has been out with right knee inflammation since June 20. Prior to landing on the disabled list, he had been pitching to a 2.43 ERA with a 42/13 K/BB ratio and 11 saves in 33 1/3 frames.

Cardinals transferred RHP Alex Meyer to the 60-day disabled list.

Meyer will not play this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February. He could start into a throw program soon, but there is still a long road ahead of him before he is ready to contribute.

Tyler Austin is combating some bruising in his right hamstring.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Austin could potentially land on the disabled list if the hamstring does not show signs of improvement soon. First base continues to be a nightmare position for the Yankees. It is not out of the question that they could potentially call Chris Carter -- who passed through waivers unclaimed after being DFAed -- back up.

Cardinals purchased the contract of SS Alejandro Mejia from Triple-A Memphis.

Mejia was hitting .235/.309/.355 with three homers and 27 RBI while splitting time between Double- and Triple-A prior to his call-up. He could see his fair share of chances at short with Aledmys Diaz being shuttled down to Triple-A on Wednesday. Given his rather pedestrian numbers in the minors, there is not a ton of fantasy upside with the 26-year-old infielder.
Jun 28 - 6:40 PM

Cardinals optioned SS Aledmys Diaz to Triple-A Memphis.

Diaz has been hitting fine (if unspectacularly) this season, slashing .260/.293/.396 with seven homers, 20 RBI and 30 runs scored in 273 at-bats. He was in a 5-for-22 slump prior to this demotion. The Cardinals will try to get him right at Triple-A, but in the meantime, Paul DeJong (starting at short on Wednesday) and Alex Mejia (just called up) will likely see the majority of at-bats at shortstop.

Ryan Dull (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this weekend.

Dull has been somewhat slow to recover since being placed on the disabled list with a right knee strain, but it is a good sign that he is now ready to start throwing off the mound in bullpen work. There is no clear timetable for his return at this juncture.

Kendall Graveman (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this weekend.

Graveman has been playing catch and is now ready to begin the next step in his throwing program. He has not pitched since late May due to a right shoulder strain. So long as he does not suffer a setback, he could potentially return to action around the All-Star break.
