Ben Zobrist is getting the night off Wednesday against the Pirates.

Jason Heyward is in right field, Jon Jay is in center, and Javier Baez is at second base in the evening matchup versus Pittsburgh right-hander Tyler Glasnow.

David Freese (hamstring) remains out of the Pirates' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

Freese is day-to-day with right hamstring soreness. Josh Harrison will start at third base and bat leadoff Wednesday versus Cubs left-hander Jon Lester. Phil Gosselin is at second base and batting eighth.

Noah Syndergaard's next start has been pushed from Wednesday to Thursday.

Robert Gsellman will take the mound on Wednesday against the Braves after Tuesday night's rainout. Syndergaard is now set for Thursday afternoon's series finale versus Atlanta. This way everybody in the Mets' rotation can basically stay on turn.

Robert Gsellman is now scheduled to start for the Mets on Wednesday night against the Braves.

Gsellman was going to be skipped in the rotation after Tuesday night's rainout, but the Mets have decided to keep him on turn and push Noah Syndergaard back to Thursday. Gsellman, 23, has registered a 5.09 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 20/6 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings (three starts, one relief appearance) this season for New York.

James Shields (lat) said he expects to resume throwing this weekend.

Shields landed on the disabled list April 21 with a strained right lat muscle, but he told reporters Wednesday that he is "very encouraged" about the early part of his recovery process. Assuming no setbacks, the veteran right-hander projects to return to the White Sox starting rotation in early May. He had registered a 1.62 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 16/10 K/BB ratio through 16 2/3 innings (three starts) this season.

Astros recalled INF/OF Tony Kemp from Triple-A Fresno.

Kemp will add needed depth to the Houston bench after outfielder Teoscar Hernandez suffered a serious left knee injury on Tuesday night. Kemp, 25, batted just .217/.296/.325 with one home run and two stolen bases in 59 games last season at the major league level. He's doubtful to hold any fantasy relevance.

Wednesday night's game between the Blue Jays and Cardinals has been postponed due to rain.

The forecast calls for continuous rain throughout the day and night in St. Louis, so this one gets an early bang. Carlos Martinez was set to face off against Mat Latos with a 7:15 p.m. CT start time. The game will be made up with a split doubleheader (12:45 p.m. CT and 6:15 p.m. CT) on Thursday at Busch Stadium.

Mallex Smith (hamstring) went 1-for-3 with a triple in his first minor league rehab game Tuesday with High-A Charlotte.

Smith has been on the disabled list since April 14 with a strained right hamstring. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times suspects the 23-year-old outfielder will be optioned to Triple-A Durham once he returns to full strength. He was batting .273/.360/.318 through 25 plate appearances with the Rays.
