Mariners acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales from the Twins for RHP Stephen Pryor.

Morales is back in Seattle after hitting just .234/.259/.325 in 162 plate appearances with the Twins, who signed him to a prorated one-year, $12 million contract in early June. The 31-year-old tallied 23 home runs and 80 RBI last season for the Mariners and will try to recapture that magic down the stretch. He was given a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the M's last fall and declined it, leading to his extended unemployment.

Mets prospect lefty Steven Matz struck out four batters over seven innings for Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday, scattering two hits and one walk.

The two hits were a second inning home run by Sean Coyle and a fourth inning double by Blake Swihart. Matz has been dominant during his six starts in the Double-A Eastern League, holding the league to a .235/.274/.338 with an 8.3 K/9. He primarily relies on a mid-90s fastball with heavy sink and needs significant improvement on his secondary pitches, but his performance at a higher level has been very encouraging.
Jul 24 - 2:31 PM

Cardinals prospect right-hander Alex Reyes struck out five batters over six innings for Low-A Peoria on Wednesday, allowing three hits, two walks, and one run.

Two of the three hits were doubles, and hitters have a .205/.328/.305 off Reyes for the season. He has the potential to be a frontline pitcher, but his below-average command could prevent him from reaching his ceiling. He has a 5.7 BB/9 for the season, but has dominated Low-A hitters and his WHIP is only 1.382. Reyes won't turn 20 until the end of August, and will likely spend the rest of the season in the Midwest League.
Jul 24 - 2:25 PM

Rockies outfield prospect Raimel Tapia went 2-for-5 with a home run for Low-A Asheville on Wednesday.

Tapia is hitting .331/.387/.463 for the season, and is hitting .351/.430/.500 in July. He started slowly, but has displayed an innate ability to make solid contact and has the potential to be a batting champion in the major leagues. The Rockies promoted David Dahl to High-A Modesto, and Tapia could be next.

Marwin Gonzalez is in the Astros' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon versus the Athletics.

Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game with soreness in his right hamstring -- something he's been dealing with since last week. But it's a manageable injury and he'll start at shortstop on Thursday. Gonzalez is batting .294/.333/.412 so far in July. He took over starting duties from Jonathan Villar at the end of June.

Orioles acquired INF Jimmy Paredes from the Royals for cash; optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Paredes was designated for assignment by Kansas City over the All-Star break. He has posted a decent .305/.332/.457 batting line with 17 stolen bases in 65 games this season at the Triple-A level, but the 25-year-old has never had much success in the majors.
Jul 24 - 1:18 PM

Yoenis Cespedes (thumb) is not in the A's starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Astros.

Cespedes sprained his right thumb on a hard swing late Wednesday night -- after clubbing two home runs earlier in the game. X-rays ruled out a fracture, but the Cuban slugger could need multiple days of rest.
Jul 24 - 1:08 PM

Athletics recalled RHP Evan Scribner from Triple-A Sacramento.

Scribner is taking the bullpen spot left vacant by Jim Johnson, who was designated for assignment on Thursday afternoon. Scribner has made two scoreless appearances this season for Oakland. He'll pitch in middle relief.
