Jean Segura's CT scan turned up negative.

Segura got drilled in the helmet by a Pedro Strop fastball on Sunday afternoon and was shaken up after the game, but it seems he avoided a serious injury and might not even need a disabled list stint. There should be more on his status Monday evening. The 25-year-old shortstop is batting .289/.324/.381 with one home run and five stolen bases in 25 games this season.

Cardinals signed 1B Dan Johnson to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Memphis.

Johnson was released by the Reds in late April after managing just two hits in 40 plate appearances at Triple-A Louisville. The 35-year-old first baseman hasn't been an effective major leaguer since 2007.

Craig Counsell has been officially named the Brewers' manager on a three-year contract.

Ron Roenicke was let go on Sunday night, but it sure seems like this change has been in the works for some time. Most teams would name a new manager and give him interim status, but the Brewers have gone ahead and committed three years to Counsell, who carries no previous managerial experience. Counsell played 16 seasons in the majors -- six for Milwaukee -- and had been working as a special assistant to Brewers GM Doug Melvin for the last four seasons. He's a graduate of Notre Dame.

Reed Johnson underwent minor surgery over the weekend to repair a damaged tendon in his left foot.

Johnson was placed on the disabled list last Wednesday after feeling a pop in his left foot while running the bases on a pinch-hit RBI double. It's not clear how long he'll be out, but it probably won't be a short absence. The 38-year-old outfielder was 4-for-18 this season for Washington.

Cubs signed LHP Daniel Schlereth to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Schlereth yielded 19 hits, 11 walks, and 13 runs in 18 innings last season for the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate. The left-hander owns a rough 4.35 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 94 career appearances at the major league level.
May 4 - 10:32 AM

Reds released RHP Chris Carpenter.

Carpenter had allowed 12 runs on 18 hits in 6 2/3 innings this season with Louisville. The 29-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in a major league game since the 2012 campaign and he spent all of 2014 in Japan. He might not have much of a future in MLB-affiliated ball.

Joaquin Benoit (arm) threw a scoreless inning in his return to action Sunday against the Rockies.

So much for that dead arm. Benoit hadn't appeared in a game since last Monday due to fatigue and there was talk this weekend that he might have to spend some time on the disabled list, but he looked plenty sharp on Sunday afternoon in earning his fifth hold of the season. The 37-year-old setup man should be a full-go moving forward.
May 4 - 10:00 AM

Devin Mesoraco (hip) was retired as a pinch-hitter in the Reds' loss to the Braves on Sunday.

Mesoraco hasn't started a game since April 11 due to a left hip impingement, but the Reds have refused to place him on the disabled list and are instead using him as a bench bat. He is 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts in that role since April 12. It's a very odd situation, though Mesoraco can at least draw some starts at DH next weekend when the Reds visit the White Sox in Chicago. It's not clear when he might be able to return to catcher.
