Jason Hammel was blasted for seven earned runs over six innings Sunday in his Cactus League start against the Angels.

This was the first bad outing of the spring for Hammel, who entered with a 3.14 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in four starts covering 14 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and walked two while striking out three. The new Royals starter is lined up to pitch the third game of the regular season.

Ryan Raburn left Sunday's Cactus League game with a left hip contusion.

He should be considered day-to-day. In camp as a non-roster invitee, the lefty-masher has hit .226/.314/.516 with three homers and seven RBI this spring.
Mar 26 - 6:38 PM

Jharel Cotton worked 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball Sunday in his Cactus League start versus the Brewers.

Cotton served up a solo homer to Ryan Braun in the bottom of the fourth but he was otherwise excellent, striking out seven batters against just one walk. The young right-hander is looking like a strong late-round fantasy value for 2017 after posting a 2.15 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 23/4 K/BB ratio over his first 29 1/3 major league innings (five starts) in 2016. He'll open as Oakland's third starter.
Mar 26 - 6:34 PM

Trevor Bauer yielded three earned runs over five innings Sunday in his Cactus League start versus the Diamondbacks.

Bauer struck out eight, but he walked three and gave up seven hits, including a David Peralta home run in the bottom of the third. The right-hander holds a 4.74 ERA in 24 2/3 innings (six starts) this spring, after finishing with a 4.26 ERA in 2016 and a 4.55 ERA in 2015. There are better fantasy options out there.
Mar 26 - 6:18 PM

Robbie Ray was ejected from his Cactus League start on Sunday for arguing balls and strikes.

The issue wasn't with the calls that he was getting on the mound; Ray took exception to a called third strike that he took while at the dish, prompting the argument. Before getting tossed, the southpaw allowed six runs on six hits over his four innings of work. Perhaps the frustration from his poor outing boiled over.
Mar 26 - 6:13 PM

Trevor Cahill struck out eight batters over five innings Sunday in his Cactus League start against the Cubs.

Chicago plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Jeimer Candelario single and a Munenori Kawasaki groundout, after Matt Szczur reached base on a fielding error by Ryan Schimpf. Cahill gave up just two total hits over his five frames, though he did walk four. The right-hander is expected to open the 2017 season in the Padres' starting rotation after posting a 2.74 ERA in one start and 49 relief appearances last year for the Cubs.
Mar 26 - 6:12 PM

Matt Garza was charged with five earned runs over 2 1/3 innings Sunday in a rough Cactus League start against the Athletics.

Garza held the A's scoreless through two, but in the top of the third he yielded two doubles, three singles, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch before getting yanked. The veteran right-hander now has an 8.59 ERA in 14 1/3 innings (five starts) this spring. He had a 4.51 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 19 starts last season for Milwaukee.
Mar 26 - 6:09 PM

Cole Hamels delivered five innings of one-run ball Sunday in his Cactus League start against the Dodgers.

The one run he gave up came on a fielder's choice out by Scott Van Slyke in the top of the second inning. Hamels struggled early on in the Cactus League, but he's been very sharp in his last two outings. The veteran lefty looks like a safe top-20 fantasy starter for 2017.
