Padres signed OF Tyson Gillies to a minor league contract.

The 26-year-old spent the past five seasons in the Phillies organization, slashing .214/.270/.289 with a pair of homers and 10 RBI in 43 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2014. He'll add organizational depth for the Padres.

Michael Saunders underwent successful surgery on Friday to remove 60% of the meniscus in his left knee and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.

Initially, the team feared he'd be sidelined until around the All-Star break, though the tear wasn't as bad as they had feared and they were able to get by simply trimming the meniscus. With a return set around mid-April, the Jays are no longer forced to scrounge up a suitable replacement and will roll with in-house options to cover left field until Saunders is recovered.

Jose Quintana threw two simulated innings on Friday and indicated that he's ready to go and right on track for where he should be at this point of the spring.

At the team's request, the 26-year-old southpaw began his throwing program later than usual this winter in order to help preserve his arm after toiling 200 innings in each of the past two seasons. Quintana wasn't shy about expressing his excitement over the start of the spring season, indicating,"I’m excited for Opening Day. It’s spring training, but it’s Opening Day, you know?"

MLB.com's Mark Bowman believes Eury Perez is the early favorite to be the Braves' Opening Day center field following Melvin Upton's (foot) injury.

It makes sense, as Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte are both better suited for the corner outfield and Perez is likely a better option than Todd Cunningham. Perez has just 23 plate appearances in the majors but is a career .305/.360/.384 hitter in the minors and has put up gaudy stolen base totals. His speed could give him some fantasy value if he finds his way into the lineup.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Athletics and Blue Jays are among the teams talking to Dayan Viciedo.

Both clubs have an opening in left field following Michael Saunders' (knee) injury, so it makes sense. Viciedo is a poor defender and has a career .298 OPS, but he's also slugged 60 homers over the last three seasons. His ideal landing spot for fantasy purposes would be in Toronto, where his power would play well at Rogers Centre.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Friday that Ryan Howard showed up to camp in the best shape "since I've known him."

Amaro made up with Howard at the beginning of spring training after saying over the winter that the club would be better off without him, and now he's bragging about the veteran's physical condition. None of it really means much. Howard is still slated to start versus righties at first base as long as he's healthy and still with the Phillies on Opening Day. He's remains capable of providing some home run pop but doesn't offer much else.

Melvin Upton has been diagnosed with sesamoiditis in his left foot and is expected to miss all of spring training.

Sesamoiditis is inflammation in the bone behind the ball of his foot. Upton will be in a cast for two weeks and a walking boot for 4-6 weeks after that. He won't be allowed to resume baseball activity until at least early April and is expected to be out until at least May 1. It's a tough break for a guy in desperate need of a bounce-back season after hitting just .198/.279/.314 in his first two seasons with the Braves. Eury Perez, Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte are options to fill in for Upton in center field.

Fangraphs' Kiley McDaniel reports that Cuban pitcher Yadier Alvares is seeking a waiver from Major League Baseball that would allow him to sign prior to July 2.

Because of his age, Alvares is supposed to be registered with MLB in order to sign in the current signing period. However, he was not allowed to register while in Cuba, so his reps are working to get him a waiver that would allow him to sign now rather than wait until July 2. McDaniel says such a waiver has been granted to Dominican kids in the past, but there's no precedent for a Cuban prospect. Also of note is that McDaniel is hearing the Dodgers "are targeting Alvares as part of an aggressive 2015 July 2nd spending push." Alvares would have to wait to sign with them, but he might be willing to do so if they're offering the most money.
