Rays reassigned 1B Casey Gillaspie, OF/1B Jake Bauers, OF Johnny Field, INF Jake Hager, INF/OF Patrick Leonard, OF Dayron Varona, RHP Andrew Kittredge, and RHP Neil Wagner to minor league camp.
A big round of cuts from Rays camp. Gillaspie is on track to make his MLB debut at some point in 2017 after batting .284/.388/.479 with 18 home runs and 64 RBI in 132 games last season between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham. The 24-year-old first base prospect was selected 20th overall by the Rays in the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Rays released RHP Jeff Walters.
Walters allowed five runs -- four earned -- in 4 2/3 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League. The 29-year-old right-hander has never appeared in a major league game.
Rays released RHP David Carpenter.
Carpenter had a 3.12 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League. He should latch on with another team, on another non-guaranteed minor league deal.
Marlins optioned RHP Severino Gonzalez to Triple-A New Orleans.
Gonzalez posted a 3.55 ERA in two starts and five relief appearances this spring in Grapefruit League play. It's not clear yet whether he's going to work out of the bullpen or rotation for the New Orleans Baby Cakes.
Marlins optioned OF Destin Hood to Triple-A New Orleans.
Hood spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A, batting .267/.316/.435 with 15 home runs, 80 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 126 games. The 26-year-old will continue operating as organizational outfield depth for the Fish.
Michael Taylor is back in Nationals camp Thursday.
Taylor was excused from the club for a week following the death of his father. The funeral is actually on Monday, but Taylor is fighting for a spot on the Nationals' bench and wanted to get back and play.
Brad Boxberger (lat) will take a week off from throwing and then build back up.
Boxberger has been bothered by a lat issue for much of spring training and still can't get over the hump with the injury. He'll try a different approach with the hope that one full week of rest might do the trick. The right-handed setup man is aiming to join the Rays' bullpen sometime in mid-to-late April. He will open the 2017 regular season on the 10-day disabled list.
Pirates reassigned RHP Brandon Cumpton, OF Eury Perez, LHP Dan Runzler, RHP Jason Stoffel, INF Eric Wood, and 1B/OF Joey Terdoslavich to minor league camp.
No surprises among this round of cuts from Pirates camp. Cumpton hasn't appeared in a game at the major league level since the 2014 season. He underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in 2015.
