Delino DeShields Jr. is starting in center field and leading off Thursday night against the Red Sox.

Leonys Martin is on the bench with the Red Sox throwing left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. DeShields should continue to start over Martin against southpaws, with Martin handling center against most righties. Interesting note: DeShields made his major league debut at second base late in Wednesday's blowout loss to the Indians.

Cubs prospect OF Albert Almora went 2-for-5 with a solo home run on Wednesday for Double-A Tennessee.

The long ball was the second of the season for Almora, who’s batting .271/.312/.364 through 33 games for Tennessee. The 2012 first-round pick missed time early in the season with a concussion, and he was held out of action last week after a scary outfield collision. Beyond that, the 21-year-old outfielder has fared well as one of the younger everyday players in the Southern League, though it wouldn’t be surprising if he spent the entire 2015 season at the Double-A level.

Cubs prospect 1B Dan Vogelbach has been placed on the 7-day disabled list at Double-A Tennessee.

He injured his hamstring running the bases on Monday, so the move will be retroactive to May 26. Vogelbach, 22, is off to a great start this season at Tennessee, batting .320/.436/.497 with 17 extra-base hits (four home runs), 24 RBI and a 38/32 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 43 games. However, with Anthony Rizzo blocking his path to the major leagues, it’s still unclear how Vogelbach might fit into the Cubs’ long-term plans.

Cuban pitcher Yadier Alvarez won't be eligible to reach an official agreement with a team until the upcoming July 2 international signing period.

Alvarez had petitioned Major League Baseball to allow him to sign early, but that request apparently got rejected. The hard-throwing 19-year-old right-hander will be one of the most sought-after prospects on the international market when July 2 hits. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported in late April that the Dodgers have been the most aggressive team on him so far, but the Blue Jays, Nationals, Rangers, and Diamondbacks are also believed to be in the mix.
May 28 - 3:13 PM

Rockies prospect David Dahl suffered a concussion and broken rib in a nasty on-field collision.

Dahl might also have a ruptured spleen and will obviously be sidelined for an extended period. The 21-year-old outfielder was batting just .263/.290/.374 with three home runs through 43 games this season at Double-A New Britain, though he has tallied 11 stolen bases. Dahl was the 10th overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft.

Blue Jays optioned RHP Scott Copeland to Triple-A Buffalo.

Copeland didn't make an appearance in his nine-day stay with the major league club. He tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Blue Jays earlier this season. The 27-year-old righty will be up and down all season.

Angels prospect Roberto Baldoquin aggravated his previously-strained left lat muscle while rehabbing at the Angels' spring training complex in Arizona.

Baldoquin has been on the disabled list at High-A Inland Empire since April 23 and he's no closer to returning now. "For him to be out this long, I think there’s more in there (in his lat area) that we’re not finding," Inland Empire manager Denny Hocking told the Orange County Register. "That’s what I think. I’m not around it, but I hope there’s something more because he needs to be on the field to develop his skills." Baldoquin signed for $8 million last December after defecting from Cuba.

Alfredo Marte is expected to join the Angels on Thursday.

He'll be replacing Collin Cowgill, who is headed for the disabled list with a hand injury. Marte was batting .343/.401/.540 with four home runs and 32 RBI in 37 games this season at Triple-A Salt Lake and should start in left field for the Angels against left-handed pitching. He may have some short-term value in AL-only fantasy leagues.
