Brad Miller missed a third straight game Sunday with a stomach virus.

Miller said he was feeling better, so he should be back out there in a day or so. The 25-year-old will be the Opening Day shortstop for the Mariners.

Seth Smith was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to a sore ankle.

"He rolled his ankle a little bit yesterday," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "It's a little swollen. It's just precautionary. We're not going to let him play today. Seventh game of the World Series, he'd be in there." Expect Smith back out there in a day or two.

Jaff Decker had to depart Sunday's game against the Braves with left calf discomfort.

Decker had to be helped off the field, suggesting that it might not be a minor tweak. The injury probably means that the outfielder will begin the season on the disabled list.

Athletics optioned OF Alex Hassan to Triple-A Nashville.

Hassan is healthy now after finally recovering from a hamstring injury, but he'll begin the season at Triple-A. A waiver claim last month, the 27-year-old made a nice impression with his eight hits in 18 at-bats this spring.
Mar 29 - 3:05 PM

Mariners optioned RHP Carson Smith to Triple-A Tacoma.

Smith held a 4.15 ERA with eight strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings this spring. The 25-year-old has loads of upside as a relief arm and should get his chance before long. His demotion could open up a spot in the bullpen for Tyler Olson.
Mar 29 - 2:48 PM

Jake Petricka is still feeling soreness in his right forearm.

An MRI last week revealed no structural damage, but Petricka resumed throwing Saturday and it apparently didn't go well. With Opening Day just a week away, it's looking like he could be headed for the disabled list. Petricka is coming off a fine season, having put up a 2.96 ERA while recording 14 saves.
Mar 29 - 2:43 PM

Brewers optioned RHP Brandon Kintzler to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Kintzler holds a 2.93 ERA over 135 relief appearances the last two seasons with the Brewers. He's struggled this spring (6.48 ERA), though, and the Brewers have decided to go in another direction. Chris Perez should now have a good chance to make the team.
Mar 29 - 2:37 PM

Jaff Decker exited Sunday's game versus the Braves with an apparent left leg injury.

Decker injured himself while leaving the batter's box and had to be helped off the field. The 25-year-old has played well this spring as he tries to win a backup job, but the injury could obviously affect his chances.
