Joe Mauer (oblique) took batting practice on the field without incident Wednesday.

Mauer is slowly but surely recovering from an oblique strain that's kept him out since July 2. He'll likely need a short rehab assignment before being activated, but the 31-year-old appears on track for a return in the first few weeks of August.

Mike Pelfrey (elbow) began a throwing program on Wednesday.

Pelfrey has been out since May 2, first with a groin strain and then nerve irritation in his elbow. He's got a long way back, but it's a step in the right direction. Pelfrey could be back with the Twins for a September cameo if things progress well.

The Rockies will recall LHP Pedro Hernandez to start Thursday's game against the Cubs, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding.

Hernandez has a 6.14 ERA with Triple-A Colorado Springs this season. The 25-year-old made 12 starts with the Twins last season, compiling a 6.83 ERA.

A source tells FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal that the Royals, Pirates, Marlins "and others" are in on Ian Kennedy.

Rosenthal also notes the right-hander isn't a certainty to be dealt at the deadline. The Padres would have incentive to hold onto him, as Kennedy still has another year of arbitration before becoming a free agent. Still, he's having a great year and the Padres would likely be better dealing him for players who will be peaking closer to when they're ready to contend. Stay tuned.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports the Blue Jays are looking at Asdrubal Cabrera to fill their second base vacancy.

The Jays have a need but don't have much payroll flexibility, making Cabrera and his expiring contract a fit. FOX Sports' Jon Morosi also mentioned the Giants as having interest in Cabrera, presumably to play the keystone as well. The "perception" around baseball, per ESPN's Buster Olney, is that the Indians are prepared to move Cabrera before the deadline.

The Orioles and Rangers are discussing a trade that would send Neal Cotts to Baltimore, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.

The Orioles are in the market for a left-handed reliever with Zach Britton having settled in as the team's closer. Sullivan reported Tuesday that the Rangers were also considering an extension for the 34-year-old. Cotts has a 3.52 ERA and 50/18 K/BB ratio over 46 innings this season and could help a contending ballclub's bullpen down the stretch.

Carlos Gonzalez (ankle, knee) is out of the Rockies' starting lineup Wednesday against the Cubs.

CarGo was limping around the visitors clubhouse at Wrigley Field before Wednesday night's game. He rolled his ankle on Saturday and also has some left knee soreness.

Red Sox recalled RHP Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Workman is starting Wednesday in place of Jon Lester, who was scratched from the outing amid rampant trade speculation. Workman owns a 4.13 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 41/19 K/BB ratio in 52 1/3 innings this season, but he's not a very good fantasy play versus Toronto.
