James Shields is available for trade, according to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi.
Shields boasts a 1.71 ERA over his last six starts with the White Sox after struggling for the first three months of the 2016 season. He still has a rough 4.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP overall and he's owed quite a bit of money (with the Padres handling a chunk). It'll be an interesting trade market and stretch run for the 34-year-old right-hander.
According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Giants "remain in active talks" with the Padres to acquire starting pitcher Andrew Cashner.
There was a report that Cashner might be traded before his start Tuesday night in Toronto, and there was also talk of that happening before his outing last Thursday in St. Louis. He pitched pretty well in both of those starts and seems likely to get moved to a contender by the August 1 trade deadline despite his 4.76 overall ERA. There has also been interest from the Marlins, Orioles, and Rangers.
Nationals recalled INF Wilmer Difo from Double-A Harrisburg.
Stephen Drew is dealing with vertigo-like symptoms, so the Nats needed infield depth. Difo, 24, has batted just .255/.320/.343 in 96 games this season at Double-A.
Nationals placed INF Stephen Drew on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 24, with vertigo-like symptoms.
Drew has been sick for over a week. It was initially diagnosed as a flu, but there is obviously something more going on. He'll try to get healthy and rejoin the Nationals when first eligible in early August.
Troy Tulowitzki is getting the day off Wednesday.
Darwin Barney will start at shortstop and bat eighth versus Padres right-hander Luis Perdomo. This is just a day of maintenance for Tulo, who's batting .317/.348/.500 with four homers and 17 RBI so far in July.
Melvin Upton is batting cleanup in his first start with the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Upton was acquired from San Diego on Tuesday morning in exchange for pitching prospect Hansel Rodriguez. He will start in left field over Michael Saunders with the Padres throwing right-hander Luis Perdomo.
Hanley Ramirez is not in the Red Sox starting lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Tigers.
Travis Shaw will start at first base and Aaron Hill will start at third base. This is just a day of rest for Hanley, who's batting .306/.411/.645 so far in July.
Padres recalled LHP Buddy Baumann from Triple-A El Paso.
Baumann has a promising 1.33 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 23/9 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings this year at Triple-A. He's faced one batter at the MLB level in his career.
