White Sox placed RHP Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

This comes on the heels of Putnam allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks over one inning of work Wednesday against the Royals. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined, but Jacob Petricka is now the clear favorite for save chances in Chicago.

Marcus Stroman allowed just one hit over seven innings and combined with two relievers on an 8-0 shutout the Red Sox on Thursday.

Showing once again how huge momentum is in baseball, the Jays ended up winning three straight over Boston after getting crushed 14-1 in Monday's season opener. The Red Sox's lone hit today was Shane Victorino's flare single in the seventh. However, even if that didn't drop in, it's unlikely Stroman would have had a chance to go for the no-no; he was at 97 pitches after seven innings and the Jays are being careful with him. The rookie is now 6-2 with a 3.21 ERA.

David Ortiz is day-to-day with spasms in his upper middle back.

Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in the ninth inning after tweaking his back on a swing. However, it doesn't sound like a major concern.

Rubby De La Rosa gave up seven runs -- six earned -- in four-plus innings Thursday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

The first-inning run scored on a passed ball and the two-run second probably never would have gotten started had Jackie Bradley Jr. been able to hold on to Juan Francisco's inning-opening triple. Still, it wasn't likely to be a very good outing for De La Rosa regardless. It's the first time in eight starts this season that he's allowed more than four runs, and his ERA jumped from 2.64 to 3.54.

Juan Francisco missed a cycle by a double and drove in four runs Thursday in the win over the Red Sox.

Francisco's second-inning triple should have been caught -- it deflected off Jackie Bradley Jr.'s glove -- but it was a well-hit ball. The homer was his 15th in 215 at-bats this season. He's always going to strike out too much to hit for average, but he's been quite a contributor this season.

Melky Cabrera doubled three times and walked Thursday against the Red Sox.

It's the first time in his career that he's had three doubled in a game. Cabrera regressed in May and June after his big April, but he's batting .365 in July.

Mets optioned OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Nieuwenhuis got the boot to clear a roster spot for infielder Wilmer Flores, who was called up Thursday with Ruben Tejada (head) dinged up. Nieuwenhuis has hit .246 in 67 plate appearances this season for New York.

David Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays with an apparent back injury.

Ortiz took a hard check-swing in the ninth inning and immediately grabbed his lower back. The Red Sox should provide a status update shortly on the veteran DH.
