Dodgers optioned 1B Clint Robinson to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Robinson played sparingly during his two weeks with the big club, collecting three hits in nine at-bats. Carl Crawford was brought back from the DL to take his spot on the roster.
Dodgers activated OF Carl Crawford from the 15-day disabled list.
That's the good news. The bad news is that manager Don Mattingly has indicated a desire to keep an arrangement of Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Yasiel Puig in the outfield, which means Crawford and is $20.25 million salary are headed for the bench. Crawford is batting .267/.293/.400 with four homers, 18 RBI and nine stolen bases over 44 games this season.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia reiterated Thursday that Jered Weaver (back) is feeling "fine" and will be ready to go for Saturday's start versus the Rangers.
"He feels good today," the skipper added. Weaver exited his last outing on Monday with tightness in his lower back, but it sounds like the ailment is no longer a concern. The right-hander owns a 3.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 93/33 K/BB ratio in 118 1/3 innings this season for the Angels.
Jon Niese (shoulder) is expected to rejoin the Mets' rotation on July 21 in Seattle.
That's just one day later than he's eligible to return. Tests have revealed inflammation of the AC joint in Niese's left shoulder, which, all things considered, was good news. The left-hander posted a 2.96 ERA over 17 starts before being placed on the disabled list over the weekend.
Arismendy Alcantara will remain with the Cubs for now.
The plan had been to send him down prior to Friday's game when Darwin Barney returned from paternity leave, but Alcantara evidently changed the Cubs' mind after going 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBI Thursday. The 22-year-old isn't guaranteed anything going forward, but he should see plenty of playing time while he's up.
Orioles optioned RHP Bud Norris to Double-A Bowie.
The move looks strange on the surface, but Norris has an option remaining and the Orioles don't want him to have a long layoff between starts with the All-Star break coming up. He figures to make one start in Double-A before being called back up. He's eligible to return on on July 20 against the Athletics.
Orioles recalled RHP Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk.
The move gives the Orioles an extra arm out of their bullpen leading into the All-Star break. Bud Norris was optioned to Double-A in a corresponding roster move.
David Buchanan limited the Brewers to one run over seven innings Thursday in the Phillies' 9-1 victory.
The Brewers were up 1-0 when Buchanan's afternoon came to an end, but they ended up scoring seven times in the top of the eighth and twice more in the ninth to make it look like a laugher. Buchanan moved to 5-5 with a 4.40 ERA. He's done a better job than expected of keeping the Phillies in games, but we'd still have a hard time trusting him in NL-only leagues.
