Mike Olt has experienced improvement with his vision problem.

Olt was placed on the disabled list with Triple-A Round Rock earlier this month due to a nagging eye issue, but symptoms have improved following eye drops and medication. He's scheduled to head to Surprise, Arizona to begin workouts and will eventually make his way back to Triple-A. There's no timetable for his return, though. Olt was hitting just .139 (10-for-72) with one home run and 32 strikeouts in 20 games prior to being placed on the disabled list.

Jeurys Familia (biceps) is close to beginning a minor league rehab assignment.

Familia, out since May 8 with right biceps tendinitis, is scheduled to pitch at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie on Saturday. If all goes well, he'll begin an official rehab stint with Triple-A Las Vegas. He should get another chance in the major league bullpen before long.

Yankees optioned RHP Dellin Betances to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Betances was called up from the minors last week, but didn't throw a pitch during his time with the big club. He'll return to a 5.40 ERA over 28 1/3 innings in Triple-A.

Yankees activated RHP Ivan Nova from the 15-day disabled list.

While Nova is back, it's not clear what his role will be initially. For what it's worth, he's listed among the relievers for Friday's game. Nova has been sidelined since late April with right triceps inflammation.

Chris Stewart (groin) is back in the Yankees' starting lineup Friday against the Rays.

Stewart injured his left groin on an awkward slide into third base last Thursday, but managed to avoid a stint on the disabled list. Austin Romine will move back into a backup role.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that Royce Ring has signed with the independent league Long Island Ducks.

Ring hasn't appeared in a major league game since the 2010 season but pitched well in limited duty last year in the minors with the Rockies. Obviously, the 32-year-old isn't close to putting on a big league uniform again.

Adam Jones is playing center field on Friday.

Jones had been limited to DH duty of late due to some minor groin soreness, but he's ready to play the field again. He's batting .316/.350/.487 with six homers and eight steals this season.

Mike Adams (back) will be activated from the disabled list on Sunday.

Adams had been scheduled to make a rehab appearance next Monday, but evidently he's recovering a little quicker than expected. It's not clear if he'll appear in a minor league game over the weekend or just throw in the bullpen to get ready. Either way, Jonathan Papelbon will have his setup man back on Sunday.
