Shelby Miller was ineffective in a loss to the Nationals on Tuesday, serving up five runs (four earned) over five innings.

Miller did strike out a season-high 10 batters, but allowed eight hits and three walks. The Nats scored four of their five runs in the first inning, and tacked on that fifth run in the third inning thanks to an A.J. Pierzynski throwing error. Miller has only twice in 16 starts allowed four-plus runs, but both have occurred in June. He still owns an outstanding 2.20 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and an 80/32 K/BB ratio over 102 1/3 innings. Miller will face a low-scoring Phillies lineup at home his next turn through the rotation.

Mat Latos allowed three runs -- two earned -- over six innings in Tuesday's win over the Giants.

Latos gave up six hits, including a home run, while striking out four. The win moved him to 3-5 with a still-unsightly 5.27 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. Latos will look to make it two in a row Sunday against the Cubs.

Jordan Zimmermann again held the opposition scoreless, this time silencing the Braves' bats in 7 2/3 innings of work to earn a win on Tuesday.

Zimmermann tossed eight scoreless innings in his last start and hasn't allowed a run since the sixth inning on June 17 against the Rays. On Tuesday, he scattered six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Zimmermann may be starting to catch his stride, sitting on a 3.16 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and a 69/19 K/BB ratio in 99 2/3 innings. He'll try to keep it going in a home start versus the Giants next.

Hanley Ramirez (hand) will return to the Red Sox' lineup on Wednesday.

Ramirez took batting practice prior to Tuesday's game and didn't have any issues with his bruised left hand. The outfielder has missed the last week of action after being hit in the hand by a line drive.

The Rockies are expected to go with a committee at closer while John Axford is on the family medical emergency list.

Nick Groke of the Denver Post lists LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Oberg and Tommy Kahnle as ninth-inning options for manager Walt Weiss. Hawkins is probably the favorite out of the gate, as he has closer experience and has pitched very well since returning from the disabled list, allowing just one run with a 7/1 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings.

Koji Uehara worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 18th save as the Red Sox eked out a 4-3 victory versus the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Uehara got Danny Valencia and Dioner Navarro to fly out to the outfield and Kevin Pillar to fly out in the infield for a stress-free ninth inning. The veteran right-hander has converted 18 saves in 20 opportunities with a 2.89 ERA and a 30/6 K/BB ratio in 28 innings.

David Ortiz hit a solo home run in a 1-for-4 effort as the Red Sox took down the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Ortiz made it a 4-0 game when he slugged a solo home run off of Marco Estrada in the third inning. He's gone yard in two of his last three games, giving him 13 on the year with 36 RBI and a .228/.313/.422 triple-slash line.
Jun 30 - 10:25 PM

Danny Salazar held the Rays to two runs -- one earned -- on just two hits over 7 2/3 innings in a 6-2 win Tuesday.

Salazar yielded just one hit over seven scoreless innings before Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI double in the eighth. Another run scored on a throwing error before Salazar was removed. The start was a necessary turn after two subpar outings his last two times out. The right-hander will carry a 3.80 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 101/24 K/BB ratio into Sunday's interleague matchup against the Pirates.
