Kyle Lohse continued to struggle, giving up four runs on 11 hits in five innings, taking the loss on Monday against the Braves.
The 11 hits matches a season-high for the right-hander, who also walked one while striking out four. Two runs came in the first inning on Kelly Johnson's home run, and two more came in the second inning on a Nick Markakis RBI double and a Johnson single. Lohse has had a miserable year, carrying a 6.29 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and a 74/23 K/BB ratio over 103 innings. He'll try to salvage his final start of the first half in L.A. against the Dodgers.
Gerardo Parra clubbed another home run in a 2-for-4 effort against the Braves in a loss on Monday.
Parra halved the Brewers' deficit to 2-1 with a solo home run in the first inning against Matt Wisler. The outfielder has hit three home runs in his last four games and is now on a six-game hitting streak. He has eight home runs, 26 RBI, 39 runs scored, and a .311/.347/.492 triple-slash line on the year.
A.J. Pierzynski singled twice and doubled twice in five at-bats on Monday as the Braves took down the Brewers.
Pierzynski neither knocked in a run nor scored a run despite reaching base four times. He logged three hits on Sunday against the Phillies as well, the first sign of life in his bat in nearly a month. The veteran backstop is hitting .280/.315/.435 with five home runs and 27 RBI this season.
Kelly Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run to help the Braves fend off the Brewers on Monday.
Johnson started the scoring with a two-run blast to right-field off of Kyle Lohse in the first inning. He added an RBI single in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game. The 33-year-old has cooled off considerably since being activated from the disabled list a month ago, but is still hitting a respectable .272/.315/.437 with seven home runs and 28 RBI.
Twins purchased the contract of LHP Ryan O'Rourke from Triple-A Rochester.
O'Rourke, 27, holds a 5.40 ERA over 22 relief appearances between Double- and Triple-A this season, although he's struck out 25 across 15 innings. He'll be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.
Twins optioned LHP Aaron Thompson to Triple-A Rochester.
Thompson has struggled the last few weeks and holds a 5.01 ERA over 41 appearances this season. He's replaced in the bullpen by Ryan O'Rourke.
Wei-Yin Chen tossed seven innings of two-run ball, but was left with a no-decision as the Orioles lost 4-2 to the Twins in 10 innings on Monday.
Chen allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five. Like opposing starter Phil Hughes, the only two runs the lefty allowed scored on solo home runs: to Torii Hunter in the first inning and to Aaron Hicks in the second. Chen's underrated season continues, as he is brandishing a 2.82 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and an 83/25 K/BB ratio in 102 innings. He will close out the first half with a home start against the Nationals.
Phil Hughes relented two runs in 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision, as the Twins eked out a 10-inning win against the Orioles on Monday.
Hughes allowed nine hits, but only two mattered: solo home runs to Manny Machado and Adam Jones. He also walked one and struck out three. Hughes has notched a quality start in five of his last six starts and currently owns a 4.19 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and a 67/11 K/BB ratio in 111 2/3 innings. He will face the Miguel Cabrera-less Tigers at home in his next start.
