Marcell Ozuna is not in the Marlins' lineup Friday.

It looks to simply be a routine day off. Cole Gillespie is in center field in Ozuna's place.
Jul 3 - 1:40 PM

Jarrod Parker (elbow) will be out of his sling and begin strengthening exercises in a week.

It's a nice step in what will be a long road back. Parker is not expected back this season after having surgery in May to stabilize the medial epicondyle fracture in his right elbow.
Jul 3 - 1:31 PM

Pat Venditte (shoulder) could resume throwing off a mound by the All-Star break.

Venditte extended his catch to 90 feet on Wednesday, making 40 throws with each arm (it's his right shoulder that caused a disabled list stint). He should be ready to return by the end of July if all goes well.
Jul 3 - 1:29 PM

Sonny Gray (illness) could be placed on the disabled list.

Gray has been released from the hospital after a nasty bout with salmonella, but he only resumed eating solid food on Thursday and is still weak. A backdated DL move would leave Gray eligible to return as soon as July 11, just before the All-Star break. Chris Bassitt will fill in for Gray again on Sunday.
Jul 3 - 1:26 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Athletics have "backed away from selling after winning more games recently."

The A's have gone 12-6 over their last 18 games to pull within 6.5 games of a Wild Card spot. It's still quite a bit of ground to make up, but it's no surprise that they appear to want to ride things out for a while longer before making a decision on which direction to go. Heyman confirms a previous report that the Mets are one of many clubs in on Ben Zobrist. The Nationals, Cubs and Yankees have also been connected to the versatile Zobrist.
Jul 3 - 1:19 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mets "might at least look at Justin Upton if he becomes available."

The club would prefer a left-handed hitter as they look to upgrade their offense, but it appears they'd overlook Upton's right-handedness since he'd be a potential game-changer. It's not a given that the Padres will be sellers, though, as they're still within reach of a Wild Card spot at six games out. Upton, of course, will be a free agent after the season.
Jul 3 - 1:12 PM

Steven Souza is not in the Rays' lineup Friday.

It's his second day off in a row, as manager Kevin Cash is giving the struggling outfielder an extended break. Souza has slugged 14 homers this season, but he's been very inconsistent and has hit just .209/.297/.411 overall with 104 strikeouts over 297 plate appearances.
Jul 3 - 12:53 PM

Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Felix Doubront from Triple-A Buffalo.

The Jays need a fifth starter following the demotion of Matt Boyd, although it's unclear whether Doubront will immediately be thrust into the rotation. The left-hander has earned a shot with some nice work at Buffalo, where he's posted a 2.44 ERA and 43/18 K/BB ratio over 48 innings.
