Jose Pirela doubled and singled in his season debut Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Pirela started at second base against Mark Buehrle tonight, and that will continue to be his role against lefties for however long he remains on the roster. What remains to be seen is whether Didi Gregorius or Stephen Drew will draw the start at shortstop on those days. Drew got the nod tonight and went 0-for-2 with two walks.

Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with an RBI single, a stolen base, and a solo home run to help the Diamondbacks take the back end of a double-header against the Rockies on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks won 13-7 in the matinee, but Goldschmidt went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. He turned things around in the nightcap, drilling a Jordan Lyles offering to right-center in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. He added an RBI single in the fifth inning to push his team's lead to 4-1. Goldschmidt owns a stellar .340/.431/.610 battling line along with seven home runs, 24 RBI, and six stolen bases on the season.

Aroldis Chapman finished off Wednesday's 3-0 shutout win against the Pirates with a scoreless ninth inning, earning his sixth save of the season in the process.

Chapman allowed a one-out double to Jung Ho Kang, but got Josh Harrison to fly out and Francisco Cervelli to ground out to end the contest. He didn't record a strikeout for just the second time in 13 appearances. Chapman is 6-for-6 in save chances with a 0.00 ERA and a 22/6 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings.

Marlon Byrd hit his fifth home run of the season in a 2-for-4 effort as the Reds topped the Pirates on Wednesday.

Byrd took Gerrit Cole out to left-center with the bases empty to pad the Reds' lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. The veteran has now homered in three consecutive games. That brings his triple-slash line up to .207/.237/.402 with five home runs and 14 RBI on the season.
May 6 - 9:50 PM

Gerrit Cole picked up his first loss of the season after giving up three runs in five innings to the Reds on Wednesday.

The Reds scored twice in the fourth inning, which included an RBI double by opposing pitcher Mike Leake. Cole also allowed a solo home run to Marlon Byrd in the fifth. Overall, he gave up eight hits and walked two while striking out four. It marked the first time in five starts he allowed more than two runs. He owns a superb 2.27 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 39/10 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings. Cole has the privilege of facing the Phillies at home in his next start.
May 6 - 9:48 PM

Mike Leake fired eight shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Leake scattered six hits -- all singles -- while walking none and striking out two. He's gone eight innings without allowing a run in back-to-back starts as he did it against the Braves his last time out. Now 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and a 27/10 K/BB ratio, Leake will look to make it three in a row as he faces the Braves at home in his next start.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said the club is leaning toward starting Tyler Lyons against the Pirates on Sunday.

Matheny couched it with the caveat "as of right now," suggesting the start is written in pencil and not pen. Lyons pitched decently in Tuesday's no-decision, and the Cards don't really have any better options at the moment. The lefty has made 13 starts over the past three seasons for the Cardinals.

Cubs released RHP Blake Parker.

The move comes just one day after the club designated him for assignment to make room for James Russell on the 40-man roster. Parker had decent numbers in the minors in recent years and should find another club to latch on with.
