Astros prospect Mark Appel will open the 2015 season at Double-A Corpus Christi.

That's where he ended the 2014 season (with a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts in 39 innings). Appel should make his major league debut at some point in 2015 if everything goes smoothly. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft and experienced some early-career struggles, but the 23-year-old is trending in the right direction now.

Jesse Chavez allowed just one unearned run over six innings of work in Wednesday's start against the Angels.

Chavez gave up only three hits and a walk while striking out six. He ends his spring having allowed eight earned runs over 22 innings (3.27 ERA) with an 18/5 K/BB ratio. As Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports, despite Chavez's productive Cactus League showing, he is headed to the bullpen. He hasn't yet been informed yet but said "the writing's on the wall".

Edwin Encarnacion homered in a second straight game Wednesday as the Blue Jays topped a Red Sox split-squad 9-7.

Encarnacion crushed one off Steven Wright today. He also walked. It seems as though he's found his swing after missing a couple of weeks due to back soreness.

Pitching on three days' rest, Steven Wright gave up four runs -- three earned -- in 3 2/3 innings versus the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Of course, pitching on three days' rest shouldn't be too much trouble for a knuckleballer. Wright, though, has been ineffective in back-to-back outings, leading to some doubt over whether he'll be Boston's fifth starter if Joe Kelly lands on the disabled list. Kelly is on the road back anyway, so the Red Sox might need an extra starter just once.

Allen Craig was credited with an inside-the-park homer against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

It was a well-hit ball, but one that would have been a double had Jose Bautista not fallen down. Craig hasn't really torn it up with a .250 average, two homers and two doubles in 48 at-bats this spring, but he's definitely looked better than he did last year. Ideally, the Red Sox would work out a trade with a team that could play him regularly, but that he's owed $21 million between 2016 and 2017 complicates matters.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets have placed Cesar Puello on outright waivers.

Puello wasn't going to make the Mets' Opening Day roster and he is out of minor league options, so the move is not surprising. The 24-year-old outfielder batted just .252/.355/.393 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 105 games last season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Carlos Martinez blanked the Mets for six innings, allowing just three hits, in the Cardinals' 5-4 win Wednesday.

Martinez also legged out an infield single after Wilmer Flores chose to hang back on his bouncer to shortstop. Martinez, named the Cardinals' fifth starter Monday, is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 22 innings this spring. Because of his upside, he shouldn't be left unowned in any mixed leagues.
Apr 1 - 5:27 PM

Kolten Wong delivered his second straight two-hit game and scored twice Wednesday against the Mets.

Finally getting it together in the final week of the spring, Wong has raised his average from .139 to .214 by going 4-for-6 the last two days.
