Travis d'Arnaud is still resting and receiving treatment on his strained right rotator cuff.
He has not resumed throwing and there's no timetable for that yet. "I can't predict that," manager Terry Collins said Tuesday. "A lot of times you come in the morning, and if he's feeling good a couple days in a row, they might start getting him on a throwing program. But right now, he's still just getting treatment." This absence for d'Arnaud might last through most or all of May.
Robbie Erlin needs Tommy John surgery.
Erlin was placed on the disabled list on April 21 with discomfort in his left elbow and further testing revealed a partial UCL tear. He's going to miss the rest of the 2016 season and the early part of 2017. Erlin, a 25-year-old former top prospect, holds a 4.54 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 109/35 K/BB ratio in 148 2/3 career major league frames.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Tuesday that Darwin Barney will begin platooning with Ryan Goins at second base.
Goins is batting just .160/.200/.235 in 85 plate appearances this season and is probably going to sit against left-handed pitchers moving forward. Barney isn't much of a hitter either, but he is excellent defensively. Devon Travis (shoulder) is still a couple weeks away.
Joe Panik (groin) added treadmill jogging and agility drills to his workout Tuesday.
It's a strong signal that he's close to returning to the Giants' starting lineup, and Panik could even pinch-hit on Tuesday night. The second baseman has been out since last Friday because of a minor groin injury.
Sergio Romo (elbow) has stretched his flat-ground throwing to 90 feet.
And he's experienced no issues thus far. Romo landed on the disabled list April 14 with a right flexor strain and will probably continue to be eased along in his rehab. We wouldn't expect him to be an option for the Giants' bullpen again until sometime after mid-May.
George Kontos (elbow) threw 40 pitches off a bullpen mound Tuesday and felt fine.
He'll make a simulated appearance on Friday and should then be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. Kontos has been out since April 19 with a flexor strain.
Mariners purchased the contract of RHP Steve Johnson from Triple-A Tacoma.
Johnson will join the Seattle bullpen Tuesday in place of Tony Zych, who is battling rotator cuff tendinitis. Johnson has an 8.14 ERA over his last 21 innings at the major league level dating back to 2013.
Mariners placed RHP Tony Zych on the 15-day disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis.
Zych was rocking a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts through 12 innings this season out of the Mariners' bullpen, and he boasts a 2.67 ERA in 30 1/3 career major league frames. It's not clear when the 25-year-old right-hander might be able to pitch again. Steve Johnson got the callup from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday to provide relief depth.
