Mets pitching prospect Steven Matz scattered three hits over seven shutout innings Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Matz, who also clubbed two hits in the victory, now leads all minor league pitchers with 68 strikeouts. Tuesday was one of his most efficient outings as Matz needed just 77 pitches to dispose of Colorado Springs. The 23-year-old owns the second-lowest ERA (1.99) in the Pacific Coast League and the third-lowest WHIP (1.04). He's working hard to improve his changeup. The 6'2" left-hander already offers a plus fastball and a solid breaking pitch.

Dodgers shortstop prospect Corey Seager delivered four hits Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The 21-year-old mega-talent homered twice Monday and is now batting .500 with four RBI over his last three contests. The former first-round pick has made a smooth transition to Triple-A, hitting .280 in 93 at-bats since his call-up. Seager is MLB.com's sixth-ranked prospect. It's no wonder the Dodgers let Hanley Ramirez walk in free agency with Seager waiting in the wings.

Pedro Alvarez is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.

He's sitting versus a lefty (Brad Hand) as he often has this season. Sean Rodriguez is at first base in Alvarez's place.

Rusney Castillo is not in Wednesday's lineup due to a sore right shoulder.

Castillo banged up the shoulder while making a diving catch during Tuesday's game and couldn't get it loose Wednesday. The Red Sox think the ailment to be minor for now, so consider Casillo day-to-day. Brock Holt is in right field Wednesday.

Rangers recalled RHP Jon Edwards from Triple-A Round Rock.

Edwards had one scoreless appearance with the big club earlier this season but has spent almost all of the year at Round Rock, where he's held a 1.15 ERA and 20/5 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 frames. He'll work in middle relief initially.

Rangers optioned OF Jake Smolinski to Triple-A Round Rock.

Smolinski had just been recalled less than a week ago, but the Rangers don't have much of a role for him with Josh Hamilton back. He's hit just .151/.299/.226 over 67 plate appearances in the majors this season.

Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports that the Red Sox are expected to promote pitching prospect Eduardo Rodriguez.

He'll get the ball on Thursday in Texas in what is expected to be just a spot start, but Rodriguez could certainly wind up getting a long-term look at some point. Ranked prior to the season by Baseball America as the No. 59 prospect in baseball, Rodriguez boasts a 2.98 ERA and 44/7 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings at Triple-A Pawucket this season. He just turned 22 in April.

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen indicated Wednesday that Vic Black (neck, shoulder) is ready to be activated from the disabled list.

It appears there's no definitive date on when it will happen, though. Black began the season on the DL with shoulder tendinitis before suffering a herniated disk in his neck.
