Neftali Feliz is expected to take over as the Rangers' closer in the wake of the Joakim Soria trade.

Soria was dealt to the Tigers on Wednesday night for right-handed pitching prospects Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel. Feliz is still working to regain his dominant raw stuff, but he owns a cool 2.61 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 10 1/3 innings of relief since rejoining the Rangers' active roster on July 4. The 26-year-old right-hander needs to be owned in all standard fantasy leagues even though his save opportunities may be few and far between for a Rangers team that has clearly mailed it in.

Rangers purchased the contract of RHP Nate Adcock from Triple-A Round Rock.

Adcock is taking the roster spot left vacant by Wednesday's Joakim Soria trade. The 26-year-old right-hander has posted a 2.76 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 16 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level and will now pitch in a middle relief role for the Rangers.

Red Sox principal owner John Henry told the Boston Herald that extension talks with impending free agent Jon Lester have been tabled until after the 2014 season.

Lester doesn't want to be distracted any longer by in-season contract negotiations and probably wants a taste of the open market -- where there could be crazy money flying around this winter. The 30-year-old left-hander is putting together the best season of his career at the perfect time, boasting a 2.50 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 142/31 K/BB ratio in 137 innings. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that the Red Sox were prepared to offer him "$100 million for five years, or thereabouts."

CC Sabathia underwent season-ending surgery on his right knee Wednesday.

The Yankees announced Thursday that the procedure went "as planned." Sabathia is aiming to be ready for the start of spring training next season, but that's not a certainty. He finished 2014 with a 5.28 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 48/10 K/BB ratio in 46 innings (eight starts). The big left-hander is under contract through 2016, with a vesting option for 2017.

Rockies outfield prospect David Dahl has been promoted to High-A Modesto.

Dahl hit .305/.345/.501 with 33 doubles, six triples, and 10 home runs for Low-A Asheville, and has been particularly hot as of late, hitting .372/.398/.521 with 18 doubles over his last 27 games. He has a large home/away split, hitting .319/.353/.556 at home and .290/.335/.438 on the road.
Jul 24 - 9:45 AM

Indians prospect outfielder Clint Frazier went 3-for-3 with a walk for Low-A Lake County on Wednesday.

Frazier has reached base by hit or walk at least once in each of the last 19 games, hitting .378/.465/.676 with six home runs, pushing his season line to .273/.352/.433 with 11 doubles, five triples, and 11 home runs. His on-base streak has coincided with the calendar flipping to July, and it is a great sign that Frazier has not begun to wear down, as is common with many prospects in their first full season of professional baseball.
Jul 24 - 9:32 AM

Twins prospect right-hander Alex Meyer struck out eight batters over six shutout innings for Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, scattering five singles.

Meyer has been solid all year, and has pitched exactly six innings in each of his last five starts. Meyer missed time with a shoulder injury in 2013, and has thrown 101 1/3 innings in 2014, 22 more innings than he threw last year. The Twins will likely begin to decrease the frequency of his starts and place additional restrictions on his pitch counts in an attempt to keep him healthy long term.
Jul 24 - 9:27 AM

Mariners third base prospect D.J. Peterson went 2-for-4 with a home run for Double-A Jackson on Wednesday.

After hitting .326/.381/.615 over 65 games with High-A High Desert, Peterson has hit .312/.363/.527 with five doubles and five home runs with Double-A Jackson. He has continued to hit at a high level despite playing in a more neutral offensive environment and the more advanced pitching in Double-A. Peterson profiles as a slugging corner infielder who hits for a solid average with good power, though he may need to move across the diamond to first base if he does not improve his defense. Either way, his bat has the potential to make him a perennial All-Star at any position.
