Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros "remain in the Cole Hamels race" but expect him to land elsewhere.

That's seemed to be the feeling for a while, as the Astros have made a nice effort for Hamels but can't seem to convince the left-hander to consider accepting a trade there. The Rangers and Dodgers are looking like the teams to beat for the southpaw.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Braves are "fielding calls" on A.J. Pierzynski and Jonny Gomes.

Pierzynski has had a surprisingly solid season, hitting .283/.322/.425 with six homers to push Christian Bethancourt back to Triple-A. Contenders would surely view him as a backup. Gomes is batting just .205/.309/.323 with four homers this season but could be a threat off the bench versus lefties.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Braves are "getting a lot of play" on Jim Johnson.

It's not a surprise, as Johnson has a 2.25 ERA in a nice bounce-back season and is only making $1.6 million. He'll be used as a setup man wherever he goes, which means his fantasy value is about to take a hit. Arodys Vizcaino is the most likely candidate to take over at closer for the Braves if/when Johnson is dealt.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Mike Leake is one of the starters the Blue Jays are considering.

Rosenthal says that the Jays' targets are "all at similar talent levels," which suggests that they aren't in the market for an ace if they're considering Leake. Toronto is "looking for the best acquisition cost," Rosenthal adds. Leake certainly didn't hurt his trade value with eight shutout innings against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Yankees purchased the contract of RHP Caleb Cotham from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He's taking Chris Capuano's spot on the roster. Cotham earned the promotion with a 2.17 ERA and 53/10 K/BB ratio over 45 2/3 relief innings between Double- and Triple-A this season. He'll be used in middle relief.
Jul 29 - 1:56 PM

Yankees designated LHP Chris Capuano for assignment.

The move comes after Capuano allowed five runs over just two-thirds of an inning in a spot start Tuesday. The left-hander held a 6.97 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 16 appearances -- four starts -- this season for the Yanks. He should be able to catch on elsewhere pretty quickly on a minor league deal.

Aaron Harang (foot) will rejoin the Phillies' rotation on Thursday against the Braves.

Harang had been slated for a rehab start, but the Phils decided to go ahead and plug him back into the rotation since they needed a starter with Cole Hamels being pushed back. The right-hander has missed four weeks of action with plantar fasciitis and figures to be on a fairly limited pitch count.

Angel Pagan is not in the Giants' lineup Wednesday.

It's a simple day off. Gregor Blanco is in center field while Pagan rests.
