Yunel Escobar is absent from the Angels' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Indians.

Escobar went 0-for-5 with a strikeout on Wednesday and is batting just .211/.253/.282 in July. Luis Valbuena will start at third base and hit sixth on Thursday at Cleveland.

Ryan Braun is out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Thursday against the Nationals.

It appears to be a routine day of maintenance for the veteran outfielder. Hernan Perez is in left field and Lewis Brinson will play center field in the matinee game at Nationals Park.

Athletics purchased the contract of C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway was pushed off the 40-man roster earlier this month, but he's needed now with Josh Phegley (oblique) hitting the disabled list. Lavarnway, 29, is a .197/.257/.315 career hitter in the majors.

Athletics activated RHP Ryan Dull from the 10-day disabled list.

Dull will rejoin the A's bullpen for Thursday afternoon's series finale in Toronto after missing two months with a right knee strain. He had a rough 6.32 ERA in 18 appearances this season before going down with that injury.

Athletics placed C Josh Phegley on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Phegley was a late scratch from the A's starting lineup on Wednesday after experiencing tightness in his left oblique and he's probably going to remain sidelined for the next 3-4 weeks. Ryan Lavarnway has been called up from Triple-A Nashville to provide depth at catcher in Oakland.

Athletics designated RHP John Axford for assignment.

Axford has been struggling mightily over the last month and hits the waiver wire Thursday having registered a 6.43 ERA, 2.10 WHIP, and 21/17 K/BB ratio in 21 total innings this season with Oakland. The 34-year-old right-hander signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Athletics in December 2015 and is still owed around $1.5 million.

Andrew Heaney (elbow) struck out seven batters over 4 2/3 scoreless innings Wednesday in the Arizona League.

Heaney also looked dominant in a rehab start last Thursday, striking out five batters in four scoreless frames, though he's facing teenagers in these Arizona League outings. The 26-year-old lefty should soon be cleared to advance his rehab assignment to one of the Angels' higher-level minor league affiliates and he could become an option for Anaheim's rotation around mid-to-late August. Heaney underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last July.

Nationals recalled LHP Sammy Solis from Triple-A Syracuse.

Solis will likely head right back down when the Nationals call up Erick Fedde to start for Stephen Strasburg (elbow) on Saturday against the Rockies. The lefty reliever has allowed 12 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings this season at the major league level.
