Vinnie Pestano got through a tumultuous ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season on Tuesday as the Indians beat the Royals 4-3.

Pestano managed the rare feat of allowing three hits and a walk while throwing a scoreless inning, as the Royals' baserunning miscues aided the cause. With Chris Perez working his way back Pestano's days closing games could be numbered, but Perez is no sure thing to be effective upon returning. The situation is worth monitoring in the days following Perez's activation.

Marco Estrada (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment at Low-A Wisconsin on Thursday.

That's assuming he's cleared by team physician William Raasch Wednesday following a successful 45-pitch bullpen session Tuesday. Estrada is expected to need just one rehab outing, putting him in line to rejoin the rotation next week.

Mike Aviles went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as the Indians beat the Royals on Tuesday.

Aviles was in the middle of the Indians' three-run eighth inning, eventually scoring the winning run on a Michael Brantley sacrifice fly. The utility infielder has gotten regular playing time with Asdrubal Cabrera sidelined, but he should return to a reserve role when Cabrera returns. He's hitting .277 on the year.

Kelvin Herrera took the loss on Tuesday, allowing three runs in just 1/3 of an inning against the Indians.

Herrera hadn't allowed a run since being recalled on June 5 but struggled mightily on Tuesday, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk. There was a point early in the season where Herrera looked like he might wrestle the closing job away from a struggling Greg Holland, but with Holland straightened out and Herrera's troubles that seems like a remote possibility anytime in 2013.

Ervin Santana allowed just one run over seven innings but didn't get the win, settling for a no-decision against the Indians on Tuesday.

Santana was in line for his sixth win of the year before Kelvin Herrera imploded in relief. It still doesn't take away from another stellar start from the right-hander, who allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out six. He now owns a 2.64 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through 14 starts. He'll take the mound again Tuesday in an interleague matchup with the Braves.

Scott Atchison has been diagnosed with a sore right groin.

Atchison suffered the injury on Tuesday while warming up before an appearance. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined.
Jun 18 - 10:08 PM

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Tuesday.

Jimenez was a mixed bag on Tuesday. Two runs allowed on just two hits? Good. Four walks and four strikeouts? Not so good. The right-hander's end results have looked alright his past few starts, but the underlying numbers still make him a crapshoot every time he goes out. His next start will come Monday against a tough Orioles lineup in Baltimore.
Jun 18 - 10:06 PM

Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as the Blue Jays beat the Rockies 8-3 on Tuesday.

The homer was Encarnacion's 19th of the year and he's somewhat quietly driven in 58 runs. The first baseman is hitting .268/.352/.526 and is showing that his career year in 2012 wasn't a fluke.
