Red Sox recalled INF Jose Iglesias from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Iglesias had been playing multiple infield spots at Pawtucket of late, which came in handy since he's replacing Will Middlebrooks (back) on the roster. He and Pedro Ciriaco should share third base for the next couple weeks.

Red Sox placed 3B Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list with lower back spasms.

Middlebrooks suffered the injury Wednesday and aggravated it Thursday. The Red Sox initially said he was day-to-day, but evidently they've decided the best course of action was to sit him down for a couple weeks. Jose Iglesias has been promoted to fill his spot on the roster and will share time with Pedro Ciriaco at the hot corner.

Red Sox placed OF Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a left hamstring strain.

Victorino ran sprints prior to Thursday's game, but evidently he still hasn't made enough progress. Given that he's also had a back issue lately, it's probably best to let him rest for a couple weeks. Daniel Nava will handle right field while Victorino is out.

Indians optioned INF Cord Phelps to Triple-A Columbus.

Phelps didn't see an at-bat during the few days he was with the big club. With Nick Swisher back from paternity leave, he heads back to the minors.
May 24 - 3:24 PM

Indians activated 1B/OF Nick Swisher from the paternity leave list.

Swisher was away from the team for a few days while attending the birth of his first child. Cord Phelps has been sent down in a corresponding move.

Reds activated LHP Manny Parra from the 15-day disabled list.

Parra had been out since late April with a pectoral injury. With Sean Marshall (shoulder) out, the Reds will likely have to use Parra in more critical situations than they'd like. He held an 8.10 ERA over 6 2/3 frames before landing on the DL.
May 24 - 3:04 PM

Reds placed LHP Sean Marshall on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a sprained left shoulder.

It's the second time this season that the shoulder has sent him to the DL, though the Reds called it tendinitis the first time around. The club figures to take it slowly with Marshall this time, so he could be looking at an extended absence. Manny Parra (pectoral) has been activated and will take Marshall's spot in the bullpen.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said during a radio interview Thursday that he anticipates "there’s some form of surgery coming" for Santiago Casilla (knee).

Casilla has dealt with a cyst on his right knee since last season and it recently became enough of an issue that he was placed on the DL. He shouldn't need a major operation, but it's not clear how long he would be sidelined.
