Yankees placed INF Gregorio Petit on the 15-day disabled list with a right hand contusion.

Rangers prospect Jorge Alfaro upped his season average to .320 Tuesday following a two-hit effort for Double-A Frisco.

A .264 lifetime hitter in the minor leagues, Alfaro has enjoyed a breakout year at Frisco, slugging .520 with a steady .386 on base percentage. As a hitter with little power who strikes out regularly (24 Ks in 75 at-bats), it's hard to determine Alfaro's ceiling. But for now, the 21-year-old seems to have figured out an approach that works for him.

Royals prospect Cheslor Cuthbert has gone 7-for-19 with three RBI over his last five games for Triple-A Omaha.

Cuthbert went 5-for-7 during a recent two-game stretch against Round Rock. His average is up to .295, much higher than his lifetime .258 clip. Scouts have to be encouraged by Cuthbert's high contact rate. In 84 at-bats, he's only been a strikeout victim nine times. Even though he's only 22, Cuthbert has already made 506 minor league appearances.

Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) is expected to begin taking dry swings on Thursday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Wednesday morning that Hanley Ramirez "is said to be feeling better" and could return to the Red Sox starting lineup in "a couple days," but there's no real timetable yet. Hanley suffered a left shoulder injury Monday when he slammed into the left-field wall at Fenway Park. He should avoid the disabled list, but the slugger might not return to games until early next week. Allen Craig is in left field on Wednesday night.

Kolten Wong is out of the Cardinals' lineup Wednesday.

Pete Kozma is starting at second base and batting eighth against Cubs left-hander Jon Lester. The left-handed-hitting Wong should be back in action on Thursday.
May 6 - 4:20 PM

Jeff Samardzija has dropped the appeal of his five-game suspension and will begin serving it Wednesday.

Samardzija was handed the five-game sentence for his role in Chicago's April 23 brawl with Kansas City. He should return to the White Sox rotation May 11 in Milwaukee.
