Giants manager Bruce Bochy has not considered shaking up the starting rotation.

Aging starters Matt Cain (0-3, 7.00 ERA) and Jake Peavy (1-2, 8.61) have both struggled this year but Bochy doesn't see any big changes coming. "I have too much confidence in these two guys," said Bochy. "I don't think there are options that are going to make this staff better." The Giants, who have won every even-year World Series this decade, are off to a disappointing 12-13 start and rank 22nd in the league in starter ERA (4.64).

Daniel Nava (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment early next week.

It's good timing for the Angels with Craig Gentry battling back stiffness. Nava has sat out the last two weeks with left knee tendinitis but has been working out in Arizona and should begin a rehab assignment any day now. He was hitting .286 before the injury.

Will Smith (knee) will ramp up his activity next week.

It's been six weeks since he tore his right LCL. Smith will meet with doctors soon to decide if he'll require surgery, which would sideline him for the rest of the year. He was expected to compete with Jeremy Jeffress for closer duties this season but now Jeffress has the gig all to himself.

Hunter Pence plated three runs Saturday in the Giants’ 6-5 loss to the Mets.

Two of those runs came in the third inning on a single to right field. Pence just missed his second grand slam of the season on an eighth-inning sac fly. The 33-year-old enjoyed an excellent first month, hitting .284 with a team-high 19 RBI. He’s tied for ninth in the NL with 16 walks this season.

Matt Cain got knocked around in Saturday’s loss to the Mets, allowing seven hits and six runs over six innings.

He finished with five strikeouts and one walk. Cain couldn’t solve Michael Conforto (3-for-4 with three RBI) and served up a home run to light-hitting Wilmer Flores in the sixth inning. He tried to back the Mets off the plate after a rocky first inning but ended up hitting two batters and allowing two more runs in the second. Not much has gone right for Cain this season. The 31-year-old is now winless in five starts with a brutal 7.00 ERA. He won’t be a fantasy option next time out against the Rockies.

Jacob deGrom survived a hectic third inning to pick up his third win of the season Saturday against the Giants.

He scattered two hits and three runs (all unearned) over six innings of work. DeGrom didn’t allow a walk in his first two starts but he handed out four free passes Saturday including one with the bases loaded. His fastball touched 95 mph at one point but mostly sat in the low 90s. DeGrom unraveled in the third after a throwing error by Wilmer Flores but he buckled down and threw zeros the rest of the way. It was a trying month for deGrom both personally and physically, but he still managed to go undefeated with a 1.02 ERA in three starts. The long-haired right-hander will go to work again Thursday in San Diego.

Michael Conforto clobbered his fourth home run of the season Saturday in the Mets’ 6-5 victory over the Giants.

Conforto contributed three hits while raising his average to a super-human .365. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. Giants starter Matt Cain simply had no answer for Conforto, getting beat in all three of their encounters. Conforto began 2015 in High-A and finished the year in the major leagues. Now he might be the Mets’ best hitter. His hot bat is a big reason why the Mets have won eight in a row.
Apr 30 - 7:38 PM

Craig Gentry is battling back stiffness.

He's started only one of the Angels' last six games. Manager Mike Scioscia said placing Gentry on the disabled list remains a possibility. That would leave the Angels dangerously thin at left field, though Daniel Nava (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week. Rafael Ortega will continue to start in left field.
