Joey Gallo finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Friday’s extra-inning loss to the Yankees.

Gallo had a big day at the plate on Wednesday, but he’s 0-for-8 with six strikeouts since. The 23-year-old slugger is hitting just .155 (9-for-58) with three home runs and 24 strikeouts this month. He still leads the Rangers with 19 home runs, but his batting average is down to .194 on the year.

Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI against the Mets on Friday.

One does wonder if Cespedes will be in and out of the Mets' lineup for the duration of the season, but he's been about as productive as ever when able to play this season, hitting .321 with nine homers, nine doubles and a 1.043 OPS in 106 at-bats.

Brandon Belt hit his third homer in four games Friday against the Mets.

Belt hit cleanup tonight after spending the last week in the bottom half of the order. His slump now seemingly over, he should go back to being a fixture in the top half of the lineup. While he hasn't performed as hoped with his .783 OPS this year, he's still the Giants' second-best hitter.

The Yankees announced they they'll call up Tyler Austin prior to Saturday's game.

Austin, who missed the first six weeks with a fractured foot, was hitting .300/.366/.560 with four homers (including three in the last four games) and 32 strikeouts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He doesn't project as a long-term regular, but then the Yankees have gotten better-than-expected results from their position prospects recently. He'll be the regular first baseman for now, so those in deeper mixed leagues could give him a shot. The team might still get Greg Bird back after the break, and it's also possible that first base will be addressed in a trade next month.

Yankees designated first baseman Chris Carter for assignment.

So much for the 2016 NL home run champ. Carter hit just .204 with eight homers and 23 RBI in 167 at-bats, but the Yankees probably would have stuck with him longer if not for his poor defense at first base. Now they'll go to Tyler Austin, a player with a similar profile but one who has been red-hot in the minors.

Alex Wood pitched six innings and allowed one run and three hits Friday in a victory over the Rockies.

It was a surprise to see Wood hit for himself in the bottom of the sixth, but he didn't come back out for the seventh after 98 pitches. That's actually a season-high pitch count for him this year, as the Dodgers have tried to be very careful with him after he opened the season in the pen. He's 8-0 with a 1.86 ERA.

Kyle Freeland gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings Friday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Freeland's last two road starts haven't gone particularly well, as he's given up five runs on each. At Coors Field, he's managed to turn in five straight quality starts and given up a total of two runs in the last two. He has another road start coming up, but since it's against the Giants, he seems to be a safe play.

Yasiel Puig homered and walked after replacing an injured Corey Seager in Friday's game against the Rockies.

It was a surprise to see Puig being held out of the lineup against a lefty tonight, even though he's been far more effective against righties this year. Once he got his chance, he showed why he should have been in there all along. The homer off starter Kyle Freeland was his first versus a lefty in 2017 and 14th overall. He's quietly on pace for a 30-homer season.
