CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees are interested in Joaquin Benoit.

The Yankees' bullpen has been a strength this season, but they could opt to just load up on relief help if they can't get another addition to their rotation. Benoit is also drawing interest from the Dodgers, but the Padres are reluctant to trade within the division and aren't sure they want to deal Benoit at all. The reliever is under contract for $8 million next season and has an $8 million vesting option for 2016.

Twins prospect LHP Lewis Thorpe allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings on Tuesday for Low-A Cedar Rapids, striking out a season high 10 batters.

The outing easily was Thorpe’s best of the season, as he established new season highs with 10 strikeouts and 5 2/3 innings pitched. The Twins understandably have limited the 18-year-old’s workload this season, as he’s completed five innings in just two of his 10 starts. After a shaky month of June, Thorpe has fared much better in July, with a 3.51 ERA and 37-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 25 2/3 innings. The strong showing has lowered his season ERA to 4.74 through 43 2/3 frames. In his 2013 professional debut, the then-17-year-old left-hander posted a stellar 2.05 ERA and 64-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 44 innings for the GCL Twins.

Josh Zeid will undergo season-ending surgery to repair bilateral sesamoiditis in his left foot.

Zeid, 27, put up a 6.97 ERA over 23 relief appearances with the big club this season. He should be fine by the time spring training rolls around.

Reds prospect RHP Robert Stephenson allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and seven walks while striking out six on Tuesday for Double-A Pensacola.

The 21-year-old has scuffled in back-to-back starts, with a combined 8.00 ERA and 11 walks over his last nine innings. His seven walks matched a season high, both of which have come since the beginning of June. The good news is that, despite his overall struggles, Stephenson has maintained a healthy strikeout rate (9.0 K/9) while holding opposing hitters to a paltry .213 batting average. He won’t reach the major leagues this season, but the right-hander should be ready to debut at some point in 2015.
Jul 30 - 1:39 PM

Orioles prospect RHP Dylan Bundy allowed two runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday for High-A Frederick, walking five batters while recording only one strikeout.

Bundy, who continues to work his way back from 2013 Tommy John surgery, has struggled over his five rehab outings at Frederick, with a 5.73 ERA and 8-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 22 innings. He still has the potential to contribute in the major leagues before the end of the season, but first the 21-year-old right-hander will need to have success against hitters at higher minor league levels.
Jul 30 - 1:30 PM

Cubs prospect RHP Pierce Johnson allowed two runs on five hits in six innings Tuesday for Double-A Tennessee, striking out eight batters.

Though he also walked three batters in the outing, Johnson has now struck out eight in back-to-back starts. The 22-year-old has been rolling since coming off the disabled list earlier this month, as he’s registered a 1.87 ERA and 35-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last six starts. However, even though the right-hander’s 2.90 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings looks good on paper, it’s hard to overlook the fact he’s also walked 43 batters during that span. Johnson has the potential to be a solid back-end starter in the major leagues, but he’ll need to improve both his control and command before getting a crack at the highest level.

Chad Jennings of the LoHud Yankees Blog was told that the Yankees' interest in Ian Kennedy was "medium."

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported last week that the Yankees were "not being aggressive" in their pursuit of Kennedy. There's also been a feeling that the Padres might prefer to hang on to Kennedy, who is under team control next season. Kennedy is currently out with an oblique injury but is expected to rejoin the rotation on Saturday.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets don't expect to trade Bartolo Colon prior to Thursday's deadline.

Puma says the Mets aren't willing to eat any of the $13 million owed to Colon, which conflicts with what Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reported last week (he said they'd be willing to eat $2 million). CBS Sports' Jon Heyman noted Tuesday that there "doesn't appear to be a great market" for Colon. The Royals, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Pirates and Braves have been connected to the righty.
